Costco has a new sign at the pharmacy, in Spanish and English, stating that starting August 25, PRESCRIPTIONS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ANTIBIOTICS.

Did I miss some news on this or is Costco flying solo with this policy?

    Thanks

It's a fact Jack. They announced this back in March and are cracking down. It's good and bad, I like the convenience of calling up the pharmacy for middle of the night delivery of Bactrim (you KNOW when you need Bactrim), but with so many people abusing the system, the effectiveness of the antibiotics is declining. Most people don't take them long enough, they stop as soon as they feel better, a big no-no.

The Associated Press: Mexico beginning crackdown on antibiotic sales

Reading local press, many people are unhappy as they will have to pay 400-600 pesos for a consultation with the doctor to get a prescription for the drug they already knew they needed.

Don't you think the little $30 peso Dr. Simi "medicos" will be writing scripts for purchase at the pharmacies they work out of like candy?

& I agree its probably for the best, if it's not already too late to do any good. The superbugs are already appearing, and I've always heard that even in the US, doctors WAY over prescribe antibiotics anyway just to appease angry patients knowing full well they aren't needed or beneficial (ie: as a placebo).. so I'd doubt it will be any different here.. just a little more cash for the doctors and a little less for the pharmacies from lost sales when people decide they can handle their colds without antibiotics.. which don't help colds anyway..

Well, what about the other farmacias around. Has everyone stopped. I need some Amoxicilina for a friend who uses it for some complexion issues.

    Help, help me Rhonda.

Funny, all this concern about people using antibiotics without a prescription. At least people tend to take them only when they´re ill: U.S. factory farms give them to all their healthy animals, daily, both as a prophylactic and to promote growth! This has long been a greater worry, but nothing has been done- at least in the U.S.- to stop this abuse. The EU does not permit it, in their member countries, and started the process of limiting this use on farm animals more than a decade ago.

Every major medical professional association in the U.S. has spoken out against the routine use of antibiotics by factory farms, but money talks louder...at least in the U.S.

Until this practice is stopped, making people get prescriptions for antibiotics may be more about protecting the doctors than protecting the patients.

We use homeopathic remedies for all the family and have never found the need to self prescribe antibiotics.
