We are trying to figure out a better way to talk to our kids while down there. We heard that skype offers a way to see them while we talk to them. Does the hotel offer anything like that? We normally leave one of our cell phones here. Pretty expensive!
Internet in the lobby that costs $5 for thirty minutes or the internet cafe a couple of blocks away across the street for less than that. If you feel you need to call, your cell may be as cheap as any option. Another choice would be to rent a cell phone from cancunvalet. The link should be on the site somewhere.
You can also rent a local cell phone from cancun valet. This is what we have always done and never had a complaint. We also get our airport transfer from them to. Check out their site and see what you think. http://www.cancunvalet.com/
We have ATT and for 4.95 for a month charge, we can get .59 / min on our phone. You just have to add it before you go, and can cancel when you git back
I used the Hotel's internet kiosk once and don't remember it having microphones and cameras installed. I would doubt Skype would be installed as they probably don't want to undercut lucrative charges for phone service in rooms (about $5 a minute as I recall) Cell phones are cheaper than the rooms, but not much. I still got hosed about $3 a minute. Text Messages cost more than usual but are a comparatively cheaper way of keeping in touch. I did notice roadside phone booths everywhere -- a phone card might be an affordable option. The best idea, as Chris suggested, would be to look into into a bucket plan or reduced roaming rate with your Cell provider before heading down. Or just keep the calls to a minimum... you're on vacation! And while we're on the subject of tourist rip-offs... bring $USD not Pesos. It makes the math easier and is usually preferred over Pesos or Credit Cards. And bring all you need. The bank machines in the Cancun Hotel District can charge huge ATM fees. $10 to $20 per transaction!
We have bought an International calling card from Costco (or anywhere in the states) and then went to the phone that is inside the little market right next to the hotel (much quieter than the street phones). This has worked well for us the 4 years we have gone!
