The US govt needs to legalize and tax drugs. As long as drugs are illegal then people will do horrible and unethical things to bring them to market.
Amen. Some of the de-criminalizing steps that some states are taking in regards to marijuana are just not enough. It protects the end user from senseless arrest and conviction, but does not solve the supply and sale problems. The war on drugs has and continues to fail miserably. Seriously, people are killing each other for the "rights" to import drugs into the country. Does that not point to a demand issue on our side of the border? The money to be made by importing and selling drugs here is so amazingly large that people will kill for a piece of the pie. Regulate, tax and control the market and that problem goes away.
Totally agreed. Before I lived in Mexico I didn't understand just how seriously the drug runners took their business. Now that I live here and see more clearly that, as you say, people will kill each other for the right to import drugs into the US, I have a very different attitude towards my pothead friends. I now see drug users as part of the problem, where before I had a live and let live attitude. In the present climate, with the present laws, if you use illegal drugs you have blood on your hands. It sounds harsh, but until drugs are legal smoking on joint on the weekend means you are contributing to demand...and that demand is getting people killed. Now some will say that the ones being killed are generally "just" drug runners, but does that mean they deserve to die? Not in my world. Truly the laws need to change. But until they do using drugs means contributing to something big and ugly and violent, like it or not. I'll get off my soapbox now...
I couldn't agree more, Rivergirl and lambert13. I enjoyed this recent blog post on the subject, from one of my favorite blogs: http://bierceannals.blogspot.com/2009/06/puritan-quest.html
The government will never make drugs legal because it's about asset forfeiture and it makes thousands of jobs for BATF, ATF, cops and Narcs. Plus the lawyers and prison guards. It big business for people on both sides.
