Hi there, We will be at Temptations for the last 2 weeks of January. This will be our first trip to Cancun and seeing the ruins at Chichen-Itza is on my list. . . ..but I'm confused and if anyone can offer some clarification, it would be greatly appreciated! 1. Are tourists allowed to climb the steps to the top of the pyramid? If not, would you recommend a tour to a different set of ruins? 2. The tours through the companies don't seem to allow enough time to explore/climb, etc. Are you better off booking a private tour? Any advice greatly welcomed!
Last I heard was that you could not climb. Not because of wear and tear on the ruins but because people kept falling down the stairs and hurting themselves. Most tours give you plenty of time to explore. You'd be surprise how much you can cover because there is not a lot to go over or read at each point of interest. However, private tours are always the best as you set your own pace but they can cost up to twice as much. Most ruins now don't allow for climbing or entering. I've been to both CI and Tulum and would say that both are must sees and that guides make a huge difference in understanding what you are looking at and pointing out what you might have missed on your own.
