When looking for a few outside places to visit on our trip, I came across Chichen Itza. From what I am hearing, this is a great place to visit. I know there are guided tours available, but are they worth the cost? Would it be better just to explore it on our own? Thanks.
I'd recommend a guided tour. Went last year and although if you went it would be great, with the tour you get to hear the history and stories. I did hear, however, that if you went without a tour, you could hire someone there cheaply. I cant confirm this as we booked the tour ahead of time.
Yeah, that was part of us booking Mexico. I've always wanted to see Chichen Itza (as well as many other things, some have been ticked off the list, some haven't).
I've taken the guided tour and it was ok... but you have to remember that when you are on a guided tour you are always at the Tour Operators pace... so if you want to do things your own way and go explore do not get the guide.
My husband and I did the guided tour and after about a hour into it and only getting to 2 sights we went our own way...we were so happy we did. The others that stuck with the tour didn't get to see half of the stuff we did. sure we missed the stories but I was there to walk around a see everything not listen to some boring old guy. If you go with the guided tour just know that you can leave it at anytime.
I would not pay the extra money for a guided tour of Chicken Pizza. If you want to have fun, rent a car for the day.
We just got back and we were not disappointed at all by not going to any ruins or tours. There is plenty to do and if this is your first timeā¦. You may not want to leave!
