I am posting this as a precautionary warning to those using ATM's in Cancun. We have been traveling to Cancun for years and own a house in Cancun. With recent changes in the regulations for converting dollars to pesos it is more convenient to use ATM's to withdraw pesos. I have been doing this frequently for the past few years numerous times per trip without incident. My last withdrawals were on May 31,2012. On June 4,2012 there were many fraudulent withdrawals from various ATM's in Cancun. I reported this to my bank and a fraud report was sent to the main office. I received a credit to my account for the amounts fraudulently withdrawn, unfortunately the person at the bank failed to suspend my card and many more fraudelent withdrawals were made on June 6th through the 8th. Again back to the bank and another report has been filed and this time the card has been suspended.

I did not lose my card as I had it in my possesion. I was back in the states when the fraudulent withdrawals began. I am not certain where my information was stolen from, however my last two withdrawals were from the Santander Cajero (ATM) in the hotel zone near the Plaza Caracoal and the Banamex Cajero in the Plaza Terramar. I am aware that this type of activity isn't limited to Mexico and/or Cancun. I am posting this as an advisory to people using ATM's in that area. Check your accounts online frequently if using ATM's.

A good reminder to everyone to be careful at ATM's anywhere, including however not limited to Cancun.

    Thanks for the heads up.

A good idea is also o increase the protection against against is:

    - Ask your bank for an ATM-Card with EMV-Chip. (chip cant be copied)
    - User your Creditcard for withdrawels (also only with EMV-Chip)

Never use ATMs located in Shopping-Malls or Convienience Store OR ATMs that have only a swipe-cardreader... I only use ATMs located inside Banks

As long as the ATM has to read the chip on your ATM/Creditcard you are pretty safe against fraudulent withdrawels.

Did you use your card to make a purchase? My guess is that's where they got your account information.

I did not make a purchase with the ATM card. It is not a debit or a credit card. I am posting just to let people know that there is some nasty stuff going on with some ATM's in Cancun right now. I know this can take place any where in the world. It's just some advice for people to be more vigilant.

Same here. Banks take responsibility for ATMs located on their premises. Those off bank premises are leased, use the bank's name and logo, but the Mexican banks take no responsibility for their operation, and will refer you to the lessee, if there's a problem.

Frankly, in three years of living here, and using ATMs all the time (in banks), I've never had an issue. On an earlier occasion, using an ATM in an OXXO, I had a problem, and the bank in question, HSBC, just told me to call the number on the machine, as it wasn't their problem!

Moral of the story, use ATMs in banks, when at all possible.
