So we wanted to do the Chichen Itza tour but thought of renting a car and driving there ourselves instead of doing the whole 15 billion hour guided thing.

Any good experiences with this or do they try and rip you off?

I don't want anything messing up getting my history and drinking on

We also are curious about this. Does anyone have any comments on the relative safety of going it "alone"? We've rented cars in Cabo and had no problems whatsoever except for the damn speed bumps every 25 feet.

I know that the reports of bad things in Mexico need to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, but we would be curious to get other opinions.

Also...someone posted that there is a reputable place walking distance from TTR that is significantly less expensive than the hotel rates for the tours... any comments on that?

    that's so true!

we're thinking on renting a JEEP for a day or two, maybe we will go to Tulum and Xcaret but we're not going to travel and spend the whole day for visiting Chichen-Itza

Last year we rented a Harley and traveled to playa del carmen, I'm planning to to the same thing this year. Any HD fan here willing to take a ride???
