Our car is off the road for a week due to a burnt out engine management computer and the concept of a courtesy car seems not to have permeated into Mexico as yet. Anyone have any recommendations for inexpensive car hire? Would rather avoid the companies that market to tourists for obvious reasons.
When I need cars for a day or so I use Executive, on Yaxchilan. As you curve around Burger King like going to Costco, it is on the left. I kept a car for a couple of months after Wilma. Pay for 6 days and the 7th is free for the rent and tax but not the insurance. I found my best deals in the internet, making the reservation for the cheapest thing they had, then asking for an upgrade by going to the office. Unfortuntely, I stopped by there a few months ago to say hola to the two people who helped me the most and they both are gone. So I cannot help you with a contact; only what has worked for me.
OK Steve but remember that, even though I had contacts there, I could always get the best rate online. The contacts then could effect an upgrade. Even going from an Atos to a Tsuru was better than an Atos.
Checked a few places out and they all seems to be about the same. 500 pesos a day for a tiny Athos. We only really need it for the convenience of the school run and the odd grocery shop, so I guess we'll stick with taxis.
Steve, you may want to go online and check carrentals.com. In years past I had rented vehicles from them at approximately $12 US per day and the mandatory $11 insurance per day. I know they cater primarily to tourists but generally I could get the best rate at their site. I no longer rent as we have a vehicle in Cancun. I was just on their site and they advertise rentals for $75 to $80 USD per week including taxes. Again that does not include insurance.
Check out rentacarcancun.com. It looks like a checvy c2 is around $200 for the week and includes all insurance and taxes.
