Hi all, My boyfriend and I (both from London, England) are coming to Cancun. Staying at the Riu Cancun (has anyone been here before? seen some dodgy reviews and was wondering if it was ok?) What's the weather like at the moment? is it true there are thunderstorms? Any info, hints or tips would be appreciated Thanks!
i haven't stayed at the Riu but it is like any other hotel, you will find lots of post for it and against it. But your real experience is what you make of it. The weather in cancun is beautiful. It is a tropical region so the weather always calls for t sorms. However if it does actually rain it is only briefly and the staffs clean up standing water and 30 min after the rain you can't even tell it had rained. We have been to cancun going on 5 years in a row next week and have only seen it rain 3 times and it hasn't ruin a single day for us. If it does rain alot one day, use it to go do your shopping. It is your vacation make it what you want it to be.
Thanks, this is very true - and i suppose it is the rainy season - im quite content to sit in a bar or hit the shops - was just wondering about clothes etc but hay a little rain never killed anyone. I will have a read up on the Riu Cant wait! we fly on Sunday - 2 more sleeps! A friend of mine that visted Cancun last year mentioned that they were bothered by people selling / offering drugs around the nightclubs etc - is this true? not that it really bothers me as (as coming from London - you get it all the time) i find a firm "No" normally does the trick but my boyfriend and i always seem to attract it (i must have one of those faces) - Has anyone else found this when in Cancun? Thanks!
you will have some people offering stuff, but its not ALL the time. Just tell them no gracias(no thank you) and you are fine! They wont follow you down the street haha, just tell them No Gracias and you are fine! Its not a huge problem, and you will LOVE your hotel!! Walking distance to the party zone, enjoy yourself!
I went with my wife and kids (6 and 7) in march and they tried to sell us drugs. I don't advise buying to anyone for 2 reasons. 1) like at home cops try to sell you drugs so they can arrest you, no fun in mx. 2) With the swine flu going around, even here in the us, drug dealers and those that make it aren't the most sterile people so I see this as a good way to spread the flu fast. I will also tell youas you are leaving the airport there will be lots of people trying to give you discount tours airport transfers. It is all a timeshare trap. Book your airport transfer before you go and find them by thier instructions or you could lose half a day.
Weather is nearly perfect. Plenty hot enough for the beach but slightly overcast means a tiny bit cooler the later in the day it gets. A bit of 5 or 10 minute showers but not even enough to be concerned and I think that this happened only once in the last week. Bring sunscreen as the price is deadly here. But if sunscreen in London is priced like everything else, it will be a bargain here. You will think beer is free after having a pint in your local pub. Don't forget to tip generously as it is not included in the bill here and the servers desperately need them to live on. You should feel good about tipping generously when you are paying only about 2 GBP. Come downtown and they will be 1 GBP or less in most places. Enjoy your holiday,
The RIU resorts are great resorts for their price. Many of the bad reviews about RIUs are by those comparing it to "Le Blanc", or those who had a bad experience. Overall I am sure you will be happy with your resort selection. As others have mentioned, you might get rain here and there, but usually it doesn't rain for long. The great thing about the rain here in Cancun is that if you get wet you will not get cold. It is actually a pretty neat experience to walk under the rain with no umbrella just letting the rain hit you. As mentioned, the RIU Cancun is very close to the party zone, but personally I think the "neat" stuff about the Riviera Maya is down south. If it is your first time coming to this part of the world, I would strongly suggest that you visit at least one archeological site (Chichen Itza is the most popular/visited but most locals I talk to tend to enjoy Ek Balam better). Make sure to go to at least one closed cenote (my personal favorite is Dos Ojos). And at last, make sure to plan a day in PDC. You could hit a cenote, then make your way to PDC.
