    Hi all.

Faith and I are coming down next month.
I've been trying to find an old thread about downtown restaurants, but no luck. I know rivergirl and TJ had some favorites.

Anyone else? Hopefully I'll get lots of suggestions that I can print out and bring with :daveandmo:

    Thanks

    Jimmy

I like El Padrino's, a small hangout pizza/Italian place on Tulum, just to the right of Chedraui. R-1 or R-2, get off at Chedraui, walk back to Tulum and its in the first block after Chedraui.

Cheap meat - Super Carnes. In the plaza where Elektra, Blockbuster and Office Max is located, near Walmart. Take the R-2 or R-15, get off at the Walmart Stop, look across the street to your right and you can see the big yellow and red Elektra store. Another landmark is that it is across the side street (Palenque) from Plaza Hollywood which is 4 stories with big red letters spelling Super Damas Fitness. I recommend the Arrachera Paquete. Medium well is called Tres Cuartas. Try the Agua de Jamaica to drink. It is a sweet tea affair made from hibiscus leaves.

Higher end, I think my new favorite place is Bandoneon, which is across form Plaza Las Americas at the corner of Bonampak (bull ring street) and Nichupte. Do a search on this board as several of us have written about Bandoneon. I went there last night and the bill was $755 (pesos; about $58 US) plus a tip. That was for 2 glasses of wine, a Cesar (spelled that way on the menu) Salad made at the table, 2 bowls of Shrimp Soup, although on the menu it is Jugo de Camerones, which translates to Shrimp Juice and a big hunk of Bife de Lomo which is pretty much Argentinian filet mignon. Salad and meat were shared and more than enough. Take R-1, R-2 or R-15, get off an Bonampak which is the first light after km 0. The bus will stop on the far side of the light. Cross the street and take a cab for $20 pesos.

Fun Place - Los Guanatos, which is at the bull ring. More of a bar semi famous for the Micheladas and the best Margaritas in town. Try the Torta Ahogada, or Drowned Torta, a tasty meat sandwich with like an au jus that you can get in a couple of degrees of hotness. Same directions as above. Very casual, has outside seating too. Can be noisy inside.

Bulk Feeding - Sirloin Stockade. Average food but all you want of it. In Paseo Cancun, past the Walmart to I think the 3rd light, with Soriana on the far right corner. Paseo Cancun begins after you pass Soriana.

A newer, Old Reliable - 100% Natural on the corner of Yaxchilan and Sunyaxchen, sort of before and across the street from La Parilla. Newly remodeled with air conditioning that works. Tasty and healthy breakfasts. Sort of famous for their smoothy type drinks.

La Pasteleteria / Creperia - On Coba after Chedraui and before the Walmart bus stop. A combo restaurant and bakery. Easy to spot on your right, across from a car dealer with a yellow front. Lots of tasty, healthy breakfast and lunch dished.

Probably my favorite - La Troje (TrO-hay). A sexy little place with great salad selections. Shrimp, nuts, fruits and delicious dressings. Tasty crepe choices and lots of other goodies. Run for a long time by the same 3 ladies. OK, across the street (Tulum) from Plaza Las Americas is a big health club called Sports City. On the back side of Sports City the street is called Acanceh. After Sports City is a vacant lot and then La Troje. Yummy. I am there on Friday nights more often than I am not there.

Rivergirl can pick up the slack here, unless her post beat mine.

    Questions welcome.

    Provecho,
