    Hi,

I am travelling to Cancun in early August (Riu Cancun) for 2 weeks - First time!
I am loking for some advice or tips on a few things that i have tried to read up on but still in the dark!!
Firstly the airport tax (that ive heard lot of different things about)
Do you have to pay when you arrive at the airport or on the day you depart for home and also does anyone have any idea of a cost??

Any other advice on money etc would be great!! :)

hi we went to the riu cancun and it was also our first visit. I also was confused and asked a lot of questions on your subjects.
firstly I do not know where you are travelling from and with whom but! we travelled from Scotland with thomson and it was very well arranged you filled in your visitors card on the flight handed it to a guy on arrival at the airport I think he then stamped it and gave us one part back word of caution keep this card locked up with your travel documents etc as you need it to get out of the country and you have to pay for a new one plus the inconvenience of replacing it.
the cost of leaving the country is 55us dollars which again was very well set up on your homeward journey at the airport the rep gives you your desk number as we went forward there was a desk set up prior to checkin at this desk you hand over your visitors card and the 55 dollars you then just carry on in the line to check in and thats more or less it.
if you are travelling from the uk I would suggest taking enough dollars to cover the charge and also for a few nights out etc likes of coco bongos we found to be cheaper paying the rep at the hotel in dollars as for some reason it was dearer in pesos also dollars are easier for tipping but to be honest other than that we used pesos for everything else if you intend on a trip to the isla mujeres for the dolpins do it on your own as it works out about half the reps cost oh and if you are paying only for entry that also includes all drinks beers grub etc etc honestly great value we managed to cut a deal as there were 8 of us provided one of us went in with the dolphins 89 dollars for the honour the rest of us would pay 20 dollars each, price up a good meal and a good few drinks then you know that that entry fee was a bargain normal entry only was 30 dollars.
have a great time we certainly did
also took lots of photos of the rius which was lovely but can be very loud depends what area you decide to settle in and another question often asked is when does the sun go of the riu well it was around 5ish where we lay but about 2ish at the quiet side

Thanks alot for your reply, very helpful. I just like to know what to expect if i can as not many people i know have been to cancun before.
We are also travelling from Scotland (glasgow) and there is only the two of us travelling (partner).
We are planning to do alot of trips when we get there, the pirate ship & the snorkelling one, that i had seen links to on this website.
I had heard a few complaints about the sun disappearing quite early but this was mainly on review websites etc, but i got the impression that some people are never going to pleased when there are so many other reviews online that say its great.
Not long to go now, hopefully august brings us good weather.
Thanks again for all your reply, its good to get info from actual people rather than reading pages and pages off websites. Laura
