Hi, everyone. I am extremely new to the area (arrived Thursday). I did search the threads for information on the bus routes but did not find any. We do have a vehicle here but wish to use the bus system to explore the area a bit before we venture out on our own. We are wanting to go to the beach tomorrow (thinking Playa Linda). We are located in SM 45 across from Paseo Cancun. We have read that we should catch the "Hotel Zone" bus to get there but that getting back could be a little tricky. Any bus route gurus out there that could give us newbies a hand? Much Thanks!!
I'm no "bus guru" but getting back- You could take R-2 to Chedraui (Av Tulum at Av Coba) and catch any bus heading for Av de la Luna (there's tons of them), getting off at Av del Sol. You'd then have to walk 5 minutes down Ave del Sol to get home, but that's not bad. R-1 would nearly get you as far: you'd just get off at the last stop before you reach Av Tulum, then walk over to Chedraui, and catch any bus headed for Av de la Luna. Alternatively, you could catch R-2 and ride it until you were across the street from Home Depot/Soriana on Kabah, then walk home from there, about a ten minute walk. R-15 would probably also get you to Chedraui; and, R-27 would get you to Hotel Handall (locals call this stop, "Super Deli"), at Av Tulum and Xcaret, and you could walk from there over to Chedraui (three minutes) and catch any bus for Av de la Luna. There are many ways to skin this cat, and it will be fun for you to experiment with the alternatives. ToriB lives over that way and she'll know all the ins and outs for you and may be able to paint this info with a finer brush than I've done, when she sees your post! Buses are the only way to go, getting in and out of the hotel zone, as taxis to and from the hotel zone tend to be really expensive. It makes me smile when I'm zipping along in the hotel zone, knowing I'm only paying 7.5 pesos for the privilege! It's one of the real bargains in Cancun. ___________________ Getting into the hotel zone, you'll probably walk west, over to Av Kohunlich, and catch a bus from there, although you could walk up Av del Sol to Av de la Luna and catch one of many buses from there. I've personally grown tired of taking taxis all the time and buses offer a change, usually taking no more than 2X the amount of time a taxi would take to get you places, unless you're traveling a considerable distance through town. By the way, there's several movies worth seeing right now playing just across the street from you at MMCinemas. With that, and Soriana's nearby, you've chosen a fairly convenient location. Walk around SM44, across Av del Sol from you, and you'll see some pretty amazing houses, a small park, and a tiny, open air Catholic Church. ___________________
I used to live behind Paseo Cancun, and would walk to the bus stop in front of Home Depot to catch the R-2. Coming back, I'd get off across the street from the Home Depot. I just asked my husband and he said that he *thinks* the R-103 (which doesn't run as often as the R-1 and R-2) goes the whole way down Ave. Andres Quintana Roo. I'm pretty sure that's correct (anyone who knows better correct me if I'm wrong). That might be an option.
If you are at a busy place, like on Tulum downtown or on the Tulum side of Plaza Las Americas, there are tons of buses, with where they go written on the window. Don't forget that buses that do not go to the Hotel Zone are $2 cheaper than those that do. Maybe V know you but not sure why he would send you to La Luna then out to Del Sol if you live across from Paseo Cancun. I know 45 goes south to Bacalar so it is not a tiny SM. Another thing to do is to just find a bus stop near your home, see what buses stop or go by, look at their destinations and reverse engineer your route. If I did not have a car, I would take a taxi rather than transfer between buses IN MOST CASES. If you are a party of 2 or more the taxi becomes more afforable compared to the bus. I am talking in town only. For value, the bus is the only way to go to and from the HZ. God forbid the bus companies have route maps available to their customers. I love the transit maps in NYC.
The bus to the Hotel Zone goes right by your neighborhood. First, it goes down Avenida Kohunlich, then turns left onto Avenida La Luna. You can catch the bus on either of these streets (but in each case, you'll have to cross the road.) R-15 goes by every 15 minutes or so, and that takes you straight to the hotel zone. Cost is 7.50 pesos There's a bus stop on the corner of La Luna and Kohunlich if you want to sit while you wait. **There's also a smaller white bus/van that I believe is R-520 or something for 5.50 pesos. It goes all the way down Avenida La Luna. This will take you to Plaza Las Americas, and it goes by every 20 or 30 minutes.
Using buses T.J., when you use buses you have to go where they go! In this case, the bulk of the buses run along Av de la Luna and- walking along Av del Sol- it's a short walk to Av de la Luna. __________________
Let see....I live off La Luna, and there is no reason, if you live by Peseo Cancun, would you ever need to go to La Luna to get to the HZ (or beach). If I were you, I would walk to either the Home Depot/Soriana and get on the R2 there. Or cross Kabah and get the R2 at the Police/Municipal Bldg. Going back, you can jump on the R2 or R15 and jump off at Coba & Kabah. The R2 at this point turns right and the R15 turns left.
It seems they don't, Tori, they live in SM45, which is across Av Andres Quintana Roo from Paseo Cancun. While R-2 is an alternative for them, and I mentioned it as one of the ways to get back from the HZ (which was what they said they'd heard was tricky), the stop in front of Home Depot isn't necessarily the closest one to where they live (though it may prove to be). The fun part is that they're going to have plenty of time to experiment, and find the alternatives they like best, depending on exactly where in SM45 they ended up! SM45 was the first place I lived in Cancun, and I ended up preferring to catch buses on Av de la Luna, because there are so many more of them to choose from, depending on where you're going. __________________
While you are right that La Luna has a GREAT selection of buses...at last from my end, cause I get the R27 that turns up Nichupte.... I guess the R15 is there only option for a direct bust to the HZ from their location...which only runs every 10-15 min. Or they can get on the R6 and go a few blocks to Xcaret and then catch the R2
V- Agreed. I lived in the 45 for almost 3 years (loved it!) and La Luna is always just a few blocks away... and it's such a nice walk through that neighborhood to get there. Parks, cute houses, tons of shade, etc. Crossing Andres Q Roo to get to Home Depot is a hot walk with no shade, crossing a major road. Plus it's probably further. No fun! R 15 also goes along Avenida Kohunlich, which wouldn't be more than 2 blocks away from anywhere in SM 45.
