This was covered in the Cancun Info forum right here, and despite the source, ABC, CBS, any of the Mexican outlets, it's the same words as the original AP wire article that surfaced this morning. While I salute the governments efforts, I wonder why there's been no action taken over the theft of public access and the public beaches from the people, and I mean residents, of Cancun. When we first moved here there were acres of beach available to the public with plenty of parking and foot access. After Wilma virtually all the hotels (and Dolphin Discovery's theft of a whole parking lot) began encroaching on what remained of the public beaches. Some of the nervier ones actually fenced off the remaining sections of beach and hung up Private Property signs. The government has issued construction permits that have removed more and more acres. Nothing has been done about this at all because of the economic pressures brought to bear by the big hotels and real estate developers. As is usual, the little guys lose and as is typical down here, there's no avenue for recourse.
Now it really is embarrassing when the New American uses a Fox News story to make fun of you! http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/world-mainmenu-26/north-america-mainmenu-36/1555 "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Einstein
Yesterday, we were speaking with a friend who is the General Manager of one of the larger hotels on the southern part of the ZH. He told us that the entire beach restoration project is on hold pending the resolution of the Gran Caribe Real Case. Also, as a result of that case, permission for all beach maintenance other than cleaning is being withheld. Bummer.
