As reported last night by Dangers on TA, it seems that the Cancun beach recovery project will continue. Several papers are reporting it including Reinicia recuperación de playas en Cancún; Fideicomiso analizará la falta de pago - Cancún Basically it says the following. 1.- Work has again started up. 2.- The program will definitely be suspended if the local Cancun "Mayor" doesn't "come to his senses." 3.- The entire Trust Committee (including the Mayor) will meet Jan. 5 to decide the future of the project. "During the session we will analyse, discuss and make a decision concerning the final agreement about the reluctant Cancun Mayor, Gregorio Sánchez Martínez, and signing the Banobras Bank documents that will permit the transfer of those $230 million pesos...that will allow us to finish the project in Cancun." 4.- On the other side El quintanarroense.com - Playa del Carmen -EL DIARIO QUE NOS UNE - The Mayor, Greg Sanchez who has classified the Trust Commission as "a farse" restated that opinion and mentioned that the decision to suspend the project was a unilateral one made by the Secretary of Tourism and not by the entire Commission. He also says that he wants to see the maintenance program and proof that it will really happen before he signs. He says he can do the project all by himself more cheaply and using Mexican dredgers. The battle of egos and politics continues.
Jim - Thanks for being so diligent about posting news here, it allows the lazy among us to remain that way and I appreciate that. What is your personal opinion of the deal that Banobras wants Greg to sign? Should he sign it?
Thanks for the kind words. As for greg: As we say in Spanish: "¿ya qué"? (which basically means "ok, so what other choice has he got?") Yes, I do think he should sign the document. I am sure that the terms are not the best but Cancun's credit and Fitch rating are certainly not the best either and Playa del Carmen has signed much the same deal with Banobras already. I know he has come up with all kinds of reasons/excuses for not having done it already but after reviewing the timeline of events, this is something that should not have waited until the deadline. Something is fishy and most of the smell is coming from downtown Cancun. Politics is certainly involved. He wants to be Governor and everybody thinks he is too new on the scene. He, on the other hand, has an ad in the paper every day saying what great things he is doing for the community with streets, parks, schools, etc. and he is using public funds for all of those projects. I believe all of that work is needed in Cancun but he is following in Chacho's footsteps in that what he is doing is for a political end to make friends in the "colonias" and not necessarily in the hotel zone. The people whose vote he wants would rather see their street paved than more sand on the beach...not understanding that one has to do with the other. Well, so much for politics--at least I didn't get into religion!
Well put. Thanks for sharing your opinion. And yes, no sand on the beach will surely translate to no money to fix potholes in those nice new streets. Perhaps he is too new on the scene if he doesn't see that. In our 'hood the city came through and bulldozed some jungle areas, then while it was ugly freshly scraped raw land the city hung HUGE signs that thanked Greg for "reclaiming our green areas." Cough, hack. I was just about to blog about how pathetic that was when one of those areas got sod and trees put in and, poof, just like that, it was a nice park. The other areas still look like hell, though they've taken down the "pat themselves on the back" signs. Those signs just screamed of political ambition and made me not feel like thanking anyone at all (even though I do like the new park).
Not sure why I pay my property taxes and Zona Federal. The road coming to my place (and further) is a shame, it has not been fixed for years, and they ignore there are beaches around here... except to give you a fine if you don't pay! :icon_sad:
