Canadian Dollars or US Dollars?

    Hi,

I am heading down to Cancun at the end of March. First time to Cancun. Very excited. Money matters are hot topics everywhere, and I tried to read as much as possible.

Is it better to take CAD or USD to get them exchanged at exchange places or hotels? Currently, as we speak, CAD is worth bit more than USD or par. Is exchange rate in Cancun very similar to what we see here or does USD get always treated better than other currencies?

I just imagine that CAD would be no problem to get it exchanged, but it might be little of hassle to use it as is, but that USD should be taken as the second currency in Cancun to be used anywhere even though Mexican government introduced the new USD regulation.

I'm bringing about $500 worth of pesos and want to bring USD or CAD for emergency. I read about withdrawing money from ATMs, but I don't want to do that as my bank, TD Canada Trust, said about $5 service charge would be added to the money withdrawn overseas + whatever the charge the local ATM company charges for service.

    Thank you very much.

My estimate- $5 CND on an ATM withdrawal of, say, $500 CND, plus the 25 pesos or so the local bank would charge you, would be far more economical than exchanging your Canadian dollars, here. If you got USD, then exchanged those here, you'd lose even more, having gone through two haircuts to get to where you wanted to be.

If your account is with Scotia Bank in Canada, you might be charged no fee, on this end, for a Scotia Bank withdrawal. People have reported a similar result with other banks, here, as well, depending on what the bank was, back home.
