Starting at 7 AM, runners will go from KM zero to the Holiday Inn Express, a distance of 2.5 KM, and return. Last year's event attracted 438 runners, with women of all ages taking part. Carmen Mendez Hernandez, originally from Progreso, Yucatan, won the event, with a time of 21'20 (that's smokin', folks!), followed by Elizabeth Romero Gonzalez, at 21'57. and Luz Serna, at 22'12. PRELIMINARY RESULTS Jim, that was a great post. Even those who live in Playa had a chance to learn where they could register for this event, without leaving town! ______________________ The race, run today, was extremely well organized, as you might expect of something sponsored by Cancun's business women! This was the second year for this event, and it kicked off on time, at about 7:08 AM, with nearly 700 registered participants- far more than last year's 438. (At 150 pesos/head, you can quickly calculate that this event more than covered its expenses!- again, something you could expect of Cancun's business women.) With hundreds of "Cancun's most fashionably fit women" turning out- ready to run in the early morning light- it was also a treat for the eyes!, for those who bothered to get up that early of a Sunday morning. When the race started, it soon became apparent many of the entrants had come just to be supportive, and were walking the 5Ks, but the winner of the event came ready to RUN, and set a blistering pace, covering the distance in a mere 18:23. This is almost three full minutes faster than last year's winning pace. I don't have her name, yet, but she was, as you might expect of a well-trained runner, scarcely winded at the finish. I'll post the names of the top three women finishers, as soon as I have them.
FINAL, OFFICIAL RESULTS I now have the official results, and the winner did, indeed, set a blistering pace- officially, just a slightly slower time than her handlers had clocked her at, finishing a minute ahead of second place, and three and half minutes ahead of the third place finisher! 1st place, ELIZABETH ROMERO, 18:25 2nd place, AIKO SEMINARIS, 20:35 3rd place, ARACELI AGUILAR, 21:49 [World record for women in this event is 14.11]
