We see everyone mention how cheap the bus system is. My question is how safe is it to take a cab instead. And curious about average cost? In jamaica there is 3 types. The vans the resorts have on site. Outside the gates are same vans @ half cost. Then of course everyone with a car is a "cab". Is it same in cancun?
I havent seen a difference in fares from getting one in front of the resort to getting one elsewhere. If you are going to main areas like Market 28, Walmart or the hotel zone, bus is the cheapest to go. I believe its about 60 cents each way pp. Very easy to get around in, just tell the driver where you are getting off, and stay near the front so he can tell you when your stop is there. Those on the bus are usually helpful as well.
If you take a cab always get your cost for the ride before you get in. That way yo dont take a chance on getting fleeced when you arrive.
I would say you are safer on the bus than in a cab, it's cheaper too. I've had a few dodgy situations with cab drivers but none on the bus. That said, when I'm not driving I still normally take a cab over the bus as it's quicker and more comfortable. In Cancun, all taxi's are painted the same, individually numbered and have uniformed drivers. There aren't really 'black market' cabs, at least not to any great extent. General taxi tips: - If you do take a taxi dont take the ones in the hotel parking lot, or at any kind of taxi stand, say outside a club or restaurant, their prices are always more. They pay to use the sites and also pay the concierges a tip for directing people to them -hence increased consumer price. Always flag one down from the road, preferably on the side of the road you are heading as the returns are often quite a way. - Always agree the price at the start of the journey and not the end. Tell them the price you will pay instead of asking. From TTR you should pay no more than 100 pesos to the party centre and no more than 60 pesos to the centre of downtown. Never ask "how much?" once you get there! If the first driver tries to charge too much then say no thank you and flag the next. It will take seconds before another arrives. - You dont need to tip (they're not expected) unless the driver does something extra like helps with bags or stops at the ATM for you etc. - Every taxi that drops off at TTR their number is recorded by the concierges in case of any problem, therefore always make sure the taxi drops you at the front entrance to ensure this happens.
Hi Folks, We always us the bus, there's stop outside Tempatations for drop off, and cross the road and head to the Rio for the bus into the party strip. Just avoid the rush hour, remember the bus's run 24/7 so even leaving the clubs its easy get the bus back, they can be very funny especially if you get a guitarist on board, Davy sang a couple of rock anthems on the bus on the way back to the hotel one night and had the whole bus singing by the time we all got off. Steve and Janet, Lovely to meet you both at long last. Lisa and the wee fat one x
