Hey just wanted to let any bus riders know that the fare has apparently increased to $8.50 pesos (at least the R-15 for sure).
Increased bus fares Had to happen sooner or later Mavsfan: those fares have been the same ever since I got here in March last year It's still a bargain!
God forbid they would raise the price to 8 or 9 pesos. Let's require more change for everyone dealing with the bus system. As I told Mavsfan last night, the local routes are normally 2 pesos less than the buses who go to and from the HZ
I am so incredibly annoyed by this as I take the bus daily into the HZ. I know it's only 1 pesos, but the buses in Mexico City are 2 pesos I think. 8.5 is NOT a bargain in any way.
Well Tori my buddy. The Metro (subways) are the same price as the bus in Mexico City, about $.20 US and those in NYC are $2.50. Now that, my dear friend, is a really big difference. Be thankful for the little things. Jeje. Plus, the margaritas at the bull ring are better than any you will find in Mexico City, or in the Hotel Zone in Cancun. And they just went up from $50 to $60 for a 1/2 liter, still a bargain. As our friend T said last night, after she spilled her 2nd one, she can get drunk much faster on these margs than those in the HZ. Yes, of course I shared my 2nd one with her and she had B to drive her home and he had my back if necessary but I was good to go.
Aye, but I am making far far far...(I could go on) less then I would be in NYC. Salaries in the states are human, not so the case here, ESPECIALLY when you are 100% commission (like myself). Bus and train fare in Philly were from 2.50 to $12 each way. i never complained of those prices as I was actually making a living. So it's kind of comparing apples to oranges.
A few more rate increases and they'll be on par with the prices for the buses in some cities in the states.. you know the on-time, not packed like sardine cans, ALL air conditioned ones, that don't drive like participants in a demolition derby... I'd bet they don't have the required permission to increase their prices, but since Cancun doesn't have much of a government right now, they can get away with it. I doubt they're paying their people any better, and I haven't seen the gas go up much.. but like everything prices just go up regardless of what the actual value of the peso is... some of you may recall that when the pesos was floating around 15 I pointed out that lots of places had increased their prices 40% to 60% even though the pesos had only slipped by 30% or so against the dollar, and I also bet that none of those places would even consider lowering the prices back down once the pesos returned to 12... well..... guess who was spot on :icon_mrgreen: Case and point.. the Costco hotdog was (I think) $13.5 when the pesos started its slide... it was $22 last time I bought one even though the peso is about back where it was and I don't expect them to go down in price.. do you? To the bus fare.. for us "wealthy" foreigners it might not be a big deal.. but the poor families of 5 (mom dad + 3 kids) that take the bus 3 or 4 times a day and only lives on $4,000, $5,000, or even $6,000 pesos a month are going to feel it big time... and it could well mean more nights without adequate food on the table... just do the math on that... 3 kids + mom to school in town.. 4 tickets x 5.5 (or I guess 6.5 now) = 22 pesos each way so 44 per day dad takes the bus to and from work.. perhaps in the hotel zone... 8.5 x 2 = 17 pesos each day & assume at least as many bus fares on the non-school days and days off.. you're looking at.. $1170 just in bus tickets each month... now factor in a 1 peso increase of each ticket.. thats another 300 or so out of dad's 4k, 5k, or 6k pesos a month... that could easily be the difference between food on the table.. and that's not even counting for non-essential bus travel or taxis.... its amazing to me how so many people can survive only making $6,000 a month and I personally know many who do make around that and some who make less.. and these are the receptionist at your hotel and the servers at your restaurants.
I feel like they JUST raised it from 6.5 to 7.5! Are they planning on raising the price every 1 - 2 years? Because that would suck. I do appreciate the air conditioned buses with soft seats, though. Totally worth it for me (only visit 2 or 3 times a month), not so much for people traveling to the HZ every day. Life is right... most people that work in the hotels only earn 4000 - 8000 pesos a month, even in more specialized jobs.
Life...I couldn't agree with you any more. Gringa..it was 6.5 pesos back in October of 08, then in early 09 it went up to 7.5. THAT is ridiculous that it's going up a whole peso again. I have been seeing the reaction on the locals faces the last three days, and the ones hearing for the first time roll their eyes when asked for an additional pesos. I will say the word bastard everyday I hand over my $.
The prices in the States sound very fair, in England, Bus and Train prices are scandalous, even just to get across town in Ashford (not that big a place) it was 3 pounds, 5 dollars! My wife had to pay over 5 pounds to go about 6 miles on the bus to work! The tube in London, i'm sure that's 4 pounds minimum for a short journey, 10 pounds for a card for the day?
