I have a quick question, how do you use the word bueno? When we have been on vacation before and someone would ask my husband how he was, he would usually say "bueno". Well, one time one of the people at the hotel said that if you use it that way, you are talking about food. You should say muy bien (sorry, I can't remember how to spell it). How should you use it? We have a musical at our school this week, and they are using "bueno" when people want to say good, and I am just curious if it is correct or not. (not that it matters, just curious)

    Thanks for the help!

"Bien" is an adverb, used to describe actions. "Como estas?" (How are you?) would require the adverb "Bien" or "Muy bien". "Habla espanol muy bien" (He/she speaks Spanish very well). So, the correct answer to "How are you?"/"Como estas?" is "Bien, gracias, y tu?" (Well thanks and you?)

"Bueno/buena/buen" are adjectives, describing nouns. "Que tenga un buen dia" ("Have a nice day"), "El nino bueno" (the good boy), "la comida buena" (the good food). (there are accents but I am on a work computer and I don't know how to make the accents on a Mac, perdon).

Using "bueno" to answer the phone is another story. I have heard a theory that it started when phones first started to spread through the country and the lines and connections were not very good. So, people started to answer their phones "Bueno?", as in "Is the line good? Can you hear me?". I don't know if that is true or not, but it sounds "good" to me!

Happy to help guys. Amers, I'm sure you would do just fine without me. :)

You can also use the expression "Que bueno!" when you want to say "How great!", ie, "Señora, we were able to provide an upgrade to the presidential suite". "Que bueno! Gracias señor!"

I believe the Mexican's I know also use bueno, depending on the situation and inflection, to also mean OK, as when you are reluctantly agreeing to something, and in other situations to be 'Are you there?' as when someone rings your doorbell and you don't answer and they start calling out BUENO in a loud voice.
