We are thinking of biking from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and need advice/tips.

Has anyone done this? If so what is your experience?
    Is it safe?
What are the road conditions like? Is it bike friendly?
Is there a path that we can take instead of the highway?
Any bike shop recommendations would be great

    Thank you

I truly would not consider this. The highway is not called "death highway" for nothing. People drive very crazy and don't pay attention to speed limits the least bit. Now that there are a few over passes I would say to cross those are even more dangerous with no where to go. Yes you could choose to not take them and go on the side access road but...still would not consider it.

I do not recommend this, as the pp said, it is called "highway of death". I've seen far too many accidents in my seven years here and the number of memorial crosses on the side of the road is astounding. There really isn't a safe passage for bikes. They have had bike races, but they close off half the highway and line it with cement blocks. Really not advisable in my humble opinion, it's taking a huge risk. It's not your bike skills, it's the skills of the thousands of idiots on the highway. :S

Is there a place in Cancun to rent a good bike (road or MTB)?
is there a place to ride?
...or i'd better enjoy my biking in the States? :)

    thanks

i have no idea what the heck those two negative remarks are all about ...its called the highway of death becouse of the day laborers who tend to drink heavily and try to WALK across the highway at night and due to the heavy traffic many are ran over hence the name highway of death!!!! the trip from the harley rental place to playa is super in either direction the highway from cancun to playa is newly renovated ..still a few potholes ,but certainly no worse than any highway ive rode on in america! no problems man itll be great!!

Well. Since there is no other road than the highway to PDC, i would strictly advise not to go there by Bicycle. Heavy Traffic, Not the best Road Conditions for Bicycles. I am even not sure if its allowed to ride there by bycycle.

And well, cant imagine that its fun to ride for 2 hours along a busy highway with a bicycle.

Yep, riding a bicycle from Cancun to PDC would be a bad idea. There is a path in the hotel zone from KM 0 (start of downtown) that I think runs the better part of 30 KM. Try that.

I know that there is a bike repair shop between Mkt 28 and Tacos Rigo and those guys did a round trip from Cancun to Puerto Morelos one morning. That too would be crazy but these guys are pro's and there were several of them.

There is a semi emergency lane but I would not dare to venture that route either. Hell, people even pass on that lane if the regular two lanes are going to slow. It's crazy here dude.
