Our son is a freshman in high school this year and is on the swim team. Two weeks ago, he earned his varsity letter by placing out at the district swim meet. This weekend, we travel to the regional swim meet to determine if he goes to state. He is an exceptional swimmer and also swims for a USA team at Texas A&M, but our region is very competitive and he’ll be swimming against mostly juniors and seniors. He is stressing a little right now (which is out of character for him) because the high school is expecting a lot from him. It doesn’t help much that we have family from all over coming to see him swim. I talked to him last night and told that we were proud of him no matter how does. We leave Friday morning and won’t be back until Saturday (if he makes finals). Wish us luck. Marsh
Good luck Marsh Jr. ~ WOW...a freshman already. He's sending him lots of luck and well wished from DE.
wooo good luck!!! tell him regionals and states are sooo much fun and not to take it too seriously! He will love the experience whether he wins or loses, really!
Just a quick update (long day, I’m going to bed). He’s having a good meet. He’s got the stomach butterflies behind him and he’s swimming great. He made finals in three strokes (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay). The meet resumes tomorrow at 5:00. Tomorrow we’ll find out if he goes to state. Marsh
Well it’s been a rollercoaster. He swam well in the 500 free and 200 IM, but didn’t make state in either. In the 400 freestyle relay (which is a four man event rather than individual), they were ranked fifth going into the finals. The way it works is the winner from each of the 8 districts in Texas automatically goes to state. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th place winners go into a pool with the best eight times from around the state taking the remaining eight spots. Our region is historically very strong, so it is assumed that if you place in the top four-you’re going to state. Our boy’s 400 freestyle relay team had a great showing and pulled off an upset, winning fourth place. All last night, we thought for sure that they were going to state. One of the seniors on the team was very emotional. Even though he was already been accepted to a private college on a swimming scholarship, he had never been to state. At 1:00 am this morning, we found out that we didn’t place and won’t be going to state. We’ve been pretty bummed all day. I know that you have to maintain perspective on all of this, but if could’ve have seen the euphoria in the upperclassmen when they thought that they were going to state-only to be crushed today when we got the official word. My heart goes out to them. Marsh
Sorry to hear that he fell short. But as a Freshman, he is only going to get better. And trust me... anybody that was there this year, will remember his name next year when he returns to this level. You have a lot to be proud of Marsh... your son is already a champion!
awe I'm sorry to hear that! You should be proud of him.. even making it that far is an accomplishment!
