We always go to Cancun in the spring..... The last few years it seems that the waves were really big. Too big for the kids to enjoy. We have always stayed at the Royal Sands. We typically leave our resort, do activities in the morning and then go out in the ocean around 3 in the afternoon..... The last 2 years the red flags were out everyday at that time....

Are the waves better or worse in the summer months? Maybe it is the time of day we are going out? Maybe just that area in front of the Royal Sands?

We are thinking about going this summer but the boys said it wasnt as fun this last spring because of the bad waves.... Thanks guys and gals.

The whole area along the side of the 7 has big waves. It does have the most beautiful beaches but the ocean is pretty rough and it's red flagged more often than not. Time of day or time of year is not going to make much difference I'm afraid.

For ocean safe to swim in then you'll need to consider switching resorts to somewhere on the top of the 7, Beachscape Kin Ha is reportedly the best beach in this area and the Riu Cancun and Las Americas are also in the same area. There is public access to the beach by the side of the Riu Cancun so maybe take a bus over one day.

Also North Beach on Isla Mujeres would be a safe place to swim with hardly any waves, maybe a day trip there would be a good idea.

Doesn't matter the time of year when you stay along the east strip of Cancun, always going to be waves youngsters shouldn't be in. One year on spring break I was swimming pretty far out in the ocean, decided to swim back to the beach for another beer, and about 10 feet from shore I couldn't go any further. The undertow was way too strong. After about 5 minutes of struggling, I finally gave up and let the waves throw me to shore, no fun. Every resort on the North shore of Cancun, however, has no waves to speak of.

MJ and I stayed at the Sands a few years ago. And the waves along the side of the 7 certainly has the waves...we also had a day or two that we had to watch out for jellies..cleared away after that. But the waves were fun to play in. As stated, La Isla beaches are good and the water is much quieter at the Top of the 7 for sure. :eek:rangehat:

If you are at The Sands you can hop the complimentary bus to The Royal Cancun which in on the Bahia de Mujeres where the waves are tiny. There you can use your card just like you were at the Sands. Easy peasy.
