Well, we´ve often spoken of the Tigres Baseball Team based in Cancun, and sometimes champion of the Mexican League. But, have you heard of the Pioneros, Cancun´s basketball team? Talk about fun, these guys are now in the championship series and are now two games ahead in their playoff series with Tampico. I saw them at their last home game, which they won 93-87. Best tickets in the house are just 130 pesos, and if they continue to win we will see more of them in Cancun, this season. The basketball arena is located about halfway between Cancun and the airport, on the east side of the highway: a billboard announces its presence. Edit: Never mind - it's a best of five, and they can advance if they win tonight in Victoria. ---------- Cool! Looks like they are on the road tonight for Game 3. Do you know whether it's a best-of-5 games, or 7 games?
You're right, I see the game is in Ciudad Victoria, not Tampico. I'm under the impression it's a best of five series, so they could advance with a win tonight. I'm new to this, having just started attending the games. I never paid much attention to basketball, but with baseball shut down till spring, I'm happy to have something else to get me out of the house! The Pinoneros have a mad Spaniard (it seems) for a coach: just watching him is almost worth the price of admission.
Apparently the team was running well and shooting well in Ciudad Victoria, where they won 107-80 to close out the series against the Tamaulipas team. The Pioneros now advance to the quarter finals. Some of these games will be played in Cancun. For anyone who would like to attend, and see for yourself how much fun it is, I'll try to keep you posted. http://www.pionerosbasket.com.mx/in...cle&id=204:a-cuartos-final-&catid=36:pioneros
It was an easy 3-0 series win, 2 at home and we made the sweep on the road. According to friends,q we took a big lead early and pretty much coasted. The Correcaminos had two great players but the supporting cast was not up to the task. But those two guys musty have average 25 a game each. The quarter finals, semi-finals and finals are all best of seven series. We play the Soles. It is 2 away, 3 at home, then 2 away, as needed until WE win 4. The Soles came in 4th in the regular season. Teams 1-4 got first round byes. 5-12 played sort of like wild card games. Now we are down to the Elite 8. We are now 5th seed, playing #4. 3 plays 6, 2 plays 7 and 1 plays 8. Unless there is an upset along the way, and with the proper teams, we will not have the home court advantage the rest of the way. For those not so serious, that means we will have to win at least one game each round on the road to win the series, Home court advantage is huge all the time but especially during the playoffs.
Re: Home court advantage Our record was 28-12 during the regular season. We were 17-3 at home and 11-9 when playing in the other team's "house".
Cool! It sounds like this next series will start on the road, but that we will have a minimum of two home games, and obviously we hope for more (unless the Pioneros sweep!). Please post the game dates once the schedule is set for the next series.
