If so, question for ya... Why do these guys keep stealing copper wire? Who in the world are they selling it to? I am TOTALLY ignorant to this crime and would like to know the rational to this, if there is one. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-electrocuted-copper-wire-web-may28,0,2605746.story Michelle
the price of copper on the open market has gone up considerably in the past few years... people will steal it from anywhere... wires, chimney/roof flashing, etc... then sell it in bulk
I got that much from the article, but WHO are they selling it to? Who buys this stuff on the black market like that? Michelle
Scrap yards. They melt it down and resell it to metal shops. It's next to impossible for the scrap yard to know if they're buying scrap or stolen metal.
Scrap copper cable prices have risen from £400 to £1300 a tonne in the past three years alone and this has caused an increase in the theft of electric and telephone cables nationwide here in Britain ( we've had £500,000 worth of telephone cables stolen from our depot here in Sheffield in the last year alone never mind the countless miles they've ripped out of the underground network and subsequent damage they cause in doing so  ) . There' a massive police awareness drive going on around these parts called ' Who's stealing it, Who's storing it, Who's buying it ' but as we have an abundance of scrap metal yards in this area due to our links with the steel industry there's always some that will turn a blind eye in return for a quick profit. Alot of the thieve's burn the plastic / paper sheathings off the cables in order to increase the value of the copper (clean bright scrap copper alone is £3500 a tonne ) but alot sell it as they aquire it becaucse the scrapmen send it off to be granulated , a process where it's shredded and a series of magnets and fans seperate the copper from the plastic . Ian
You joke about this but its true. A 2pence piece ( dated before 1992 as they changed the amount of the copper content after that ) is actually worth more than 2p however it's illegal to destroy deface notes / coins so a bit of a no no realy   Ian
