I've been caught unawares, again, by another holiday nobody told me about! It's "Revolution Day," this time (I hope there's not too many of these, but I know Mexico's had a troubled past). Who's gonna start tellin' us about these things, huh? I had things I was planning to do on Monday- now, once again, it's all up in the air....
The myisla site does a pretty good job with holidays. And look for the anniversary of statehood coming up!
Not sure exactly whose responsibility it should be to know these things but Google is always a good friend: http://www.mexonline.com/holiday.htm http://www.google.com/search?q=mexican holidays&hl=es&sourceid=gd&rlz=1D1GGLD_esMX350MX350
Appreciate everybody's offerings, but after looking them over, looks like I'll be left with somewhat the same problem, not knowing what will be open and what will be closed.
Jim, those websites don't specify, in every case, when a holiday is going to be observed, instead of when it is, historically, so it doesn't represent a complete solution. The Day of the Dead was my first experience with "stealth" holidays, and other than government offices and banks, no one seemed to know what was going to be open that day. I had appointments on the Monday that holiday was to be observed, and it turned out the quasi-governmental office I was going to was open, in spite of the holidays- making it more disruptive than if everything had been closed. Jim, if I'm not mistaken, you follow the local news, closely, and may be able to help us stay informed along these lines, if you had the time and interest.
I hope you take this post as it is intended...as a suggestion. If you look at all of the links and do your own investigation of your newly adopted country, you will find the information you seek. Local newspapers are online for everyone (I will be happy to post a list of the ones I look at everyday if you don't have it.) and although I mentioned previously that I am not sure whose responsibility it is to inform...I might suggest that it is yours to inform yourself and that I don't have any intention of posting..."December 11 may or may not be a bank holiday--just wait and see," since the 12th is a Saturday. Come on now--get out there--engage, read, study, learn. If you don't, I guarantee you will not last and most certainly will have many other persons, places and things "sneaking up on you." Lots of history and culture to enjoy. Enjoy them!

What I offered was a list of local media sources. Here are the ones I read everyday and there are many more of course. National: http://www.reforma.com/ http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/noticias.html http://www.thenews.com.mx/home/tnportada_h.asp http://www.milenio.com/portal/index.php http://www.mexconnect.com/pages/news Regional: http://www.yucatan.com.mx/default.asp http://www.lavozdequintanaroo.com.mx/ http://tvislamujeres.blogspot.com/ http://www.poresto.net/ http://www.diariolaverdad.com.mx/ http://www.elquintanarroense.com/nuevosite/index2.php http://www.sipse.com/ http://www.noticaribe.com.mx/noticias/ http://www.diariorespuesta.com.mx/online2/ Local (Cancun) http://www.diarioque.com.mx/ http://www.enfoqueradio.com.mx/ http://www.elperiodico.com.mx/ http://www.poresto.net/ http://www.sipse.com/ http://www.noticaribe.com.mx/noticias/ Some are duplicated since they are regional but also have a lot of local news. Anyone who has some other good ones, please add them.
Thanks, Jim. I knew I must be missing something! (But, I don't think I caught the full implications of your suggestion that we, "...read, study, learn...!")
