It happened in Texas...these big fish make me scared about swimming in some of our lakes: http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=111333 Check out the photo album link in that post.
WOW! My folks almost bought property at Sam Rayburn last year. Due to last minutes changes and family involvement on behalf of the seller, the deal fell through. My folks were crushed, but like most things in life - there was a purpose and it ended up being a blessing. They just finished building a lakehoue at lake limestone, which is gorgeous - and GAR FREE as far as I know. I have dealt with gar down in Brazos river area - they are very very nasty animals. If you ever caught one or got it in the boat, you needed a baseball bat to kill it. If you let it live, it would/could easily mame or kill all in the boat.
Yikes! Got more pics on the alligator gar caught at Sam Rayburn. The other link doesn't have the pics anymore, so here's two more from other forums and the discussions: http://www.lakepirateforums.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=4811.html http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=011778 The captions on the pics (and on the email) say this was at Broken Bow, Oklahoma; however, websleuths have determined it was at Sam Rayburn.
I know. I took a dip next in a lake just upriver from a dam, and its durn deep! Can't say I'll do it again with visions of THOSE things possibly hiding below  BTW, 99% of all lakes in Texas are artificial...dams involved.
