Anyone ever, or do own Akbash dog? Ok today I go pick up my new puppy. Hes a Akbash. Im getting him from a rescue group. Hes nine months old, fixed. I have read up on the breed, and the independent nature sounds a lot like the English Pointer I had and loved. If anyone has had one and has any helpful hints on training, feel free to advise.

Never had a Akbash. But that's awesome and congrats. I bet your super pumped. My dogs (2 when I was a kid, and 1 of my own now) were all basically rescue or dogs from the SPCA. So we never really knew their breed 100%. 1 was a shepherd/collie mix, then a border collie mix, and mine is a Spitz mix (looks nothing like a spitz).

At 9 months he already might be part of the way trained. Which makes things so much easier. I got my pup at 5 weeks, so that had its work cut out from the beginning. She was so scared at night, I would have to sleep with my finger in the crate. Eventually give up on the crate at night. As she grew, the crate became useless, and now she thinks she owns every bed and soft spot in the house.

One thing I know about training is you can't really yell too much if you find what they did wrong way after they did it. So like if the dog peed on the floor hours ago, yelling at them when they get home from work is pointless. The don't fully grasp what it is you are mad at, and why it is wrong, they just know you are mad at something and get scared. Penny Lane (that’s my dog), only ate the corner on 2 things, we just always made sure she had lots of fun toys around to divert from shoes and furniture.

Like I said, at 9 months you may be past some of that bad stuff. My dad just got a new dog, and he is 6 months. Basically fully trained in 2 weeks.

Post some pics when you get him.

This was Penny when I first brought her home and dropped the surprise on Elyse.
