Guys I'm kinda stressing about this little (big) detail. Jessica and I are flying standby so we don't know what time we will get to the airport. We haven't booked a van because of this. Should we plan on just getting a taxi? And how much is the taxi going you cost us? (Poor barely out of college grads here) I'm a bit of a planner and since this is our first time I'm a little more nervous about everything. I was told to just ask the taxi how much it will be before we get in and we should get a good deal. In Cuba we told them "we have $5 take us here" and they would. Is that how Cancun will work?
We use Best Day Travel and have had no problem cost $52.00 round trip to TTR. I would not recommend taking a taxi.
We missed out reservation for transfer because we got bumped on our flight. Cost us $50 more when we got there. I would contact US Transfer and ask them if they can be flexible with your arrival time. Explain your situation and I'm sure that they will help you however they can. Taking a taxi can be a bit of a gamble.
I'm pretty sure if you go outside to the USA transfer rep they would take care of you. You might have to wait a few minutes but I doubt they would pass on the cash. The taxi service at the airport is more like a transfer company and more expensive.
I always fly standby and take the cab all the time. Standby has its benefits (nearly free); but, comes with a slight hassle from our non standby compatriots. If you can check the loads 24-48 hours out you can book with USA Transfers I am sure. I might try this method in August. Go to the desk just past the time share hawks and tell them you want to do the shared ride. With the exception of spring break time it should be 35$US. Just do the one way and catch a regular cab back. The price they will quote you for the return is a little more than a cab and puts you on a schedule. Spring break season will cost you 60$ish. I have not tried this and often have thought, if you walk out the door and turn left. Go past the bushes and this will put you in the arrivals section. You might could get a local cab from there?? I have never tried to haggle with the taxi people; but, I am sure if you told them to take you to La Isla and you would catch the bus there, they would probably reduce the quoted fare. Are you the employee or on a buddy pass? When are you going?
We believe you can book USA transfer when your seating is confirmed. Maybe Steve, or one with similar experiences can help. One thought, don't stress out over this, you will be on vacation. I think for you to board a van, they have to show you as being booked. Not just a walk up. Not 100 percent on that one.
Unfortunately those of us that fly standby may not have a confirmed seat till 2 or 3 minutes before the door is closing. I have been rushed down the jetway with the gate agent quickly in tow before and the door closed up front before I am even seated. It is a price we pay for nearly free flying. 2 or 3 minutes is not much time to put in a reservation. I guess if the flight is long enough you could buy the Internet for the flight and set it up over e-mail. hmmmmm, something to think about.
Unfortunately all the local taxi drivers know if they get caught picking up fares on the airport property they will lose their taxi license - the only way to get to use a local taxi from the airport is to walk completely off the airport property(a really long walk) and hope you could flag down a taxi.
Last year I booked my transfer but messed it up. The USA guys were looking for my reservation but was not able to find it because I messed up. They tried to help me out but without any reservations they could not do anything for me. I was forced to take a taxi and was able to negotiate the price down to 60 one way.
