So is the tap water there allegedly filtered? For brushing teeth, good ice, etc. figure the stuff that makes you the most ill is pool water slopping into drinks or splashing into your mouth when you are passed all slack-jawed.
Been reading on the forums, but have not heard any horror stories... But if you want to be sure... Travel Water Purifier - Travel Water Filters | SteriPEN Traveler or these: Home - Potable Aqua Water Purification Tablets
We used tap water for brushing teeth and never got sick..we haven't heard anything bad about the water. Water for ice cubes is apparently filtered...I figure there's enough alcohol in our system to kill any bacteria that might get through their system anyway...
May 12-20 will be our 13th trip to TTR and I can say the only problem I have had with the water/ice is the fact that it melts way to fast so I have to drink faster. (not that I am complaining). Even spent many nights in the old section of Cancun (downtown area) at the local bars without issues. I would worry about pool water if anything.
I am told that there is an international standard for resorts where if the ice cube has a hole in it... it is using filtered/purified water. But if you are drinking water, you want to make sure that they crack the seal on the bottle right infront of you.
the hotel has one of the best water purifiers that are made. all the ice and water used in the soda guns are triple filtered. i have also heard that that use it for washing the food also.the same goes for the rooms. IF the water is NOT treated there will be a sign over the faucet that state "not potable water" or not for drinking. 15 trips to the resort and never had a problem.
I drink the water out of the sink all the time when I am there and never had a problem. It does have a different taste to it but once again I am use to well water here. It tells you over the sink that it is drinkable.
UNFORTUNATELY, we did have a problem our last trip. I was after my husband to "drink some water" so he wouldn't get dehydrated like he usually does. Well, the day before we left he got VIOLENTLY ill. And no, it wasn't because of a hangover or too much to drink. As long as I've known him he has been sick like that 4 times. Once because of too much tequila, once at home because of food poisoning, once at the Riu Caribe Cancun (Doc said water ingestion of somekind) and once at TTR last year. It has to be the water. That was the only thing different he had that I didn't. I always stick to the bottled. We've been to Cancun numerous times and you can tell by the taste and smell sometimes of the water whether or not it has been filtered and purified. If not it has that "sulpher" kind of thing going on. Sometimes we get that and sometimes not at TTR when you order it from the bars or restaurants. So my advice to be 100% safe. DON'T DRINK THE WATER! Stick to bottled for drinking and brushing. As far as ice? The alcohol kills anything!
Very good advice.......and how do we know they change their water filters often enough and do they use any chlorine to kill bacteria.... Regardless the water is going to be much different then what most of us are used to drinking......and that alone can cause problems....... We always drink the bottled water and use it for brushing our teeth also...... Better safe than sorry......:aktion060:
We don't even drink the tap water at home, so obviously we don't drink the tap water somewhere else (but trust us you could). We have spent quite a bit of time in Cancun and have never got sick from brushing our teeth with tap water, or from the ice, or from anything other than what would get you sick from back home. Under cooked meat and drinking pool water are what you should really be looking out for while in Mexico, same as back home.
