We went to Cancun in February and after getting through customs and collecting our bags, we had to hand over the food declaration sheet and the lady asked us "Are you married" I said no. We got married in September 2012 and my passport is still in my maiden name. I pressed the button which I understand is to do with searches and it turned green, as did my husbands and off we went.

We are due back to Cancun in September and have been saying that should we get asked this time are we married, we will say yes.
Does this mean we only press the button once and if it goes red we both get searched? Will they be funny with us because my passport is in my maiden name as are the travel arrangements?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I think the "are you married" bit is to do with the customs form you have to fill in, as you only do one per "family".
We (married) only press the button once, have been "red lighted" and both got searched.
I don't think they'll care that your married name is not on your passport. Fret not about the little things. Just worry about how many shoes you can pack!

We're not "legallly" married we just say we're together, sometime we both have to push the button, and sometimes only one of us does. Its a hit and miss random security check. Personally speaking I would get your passport updated and have your names corrected on your itinerary. Could go along way if anything happens.

If you choose not to change anything, then I wouldn't tell them your married in case they choose to hold you back and do a background check, which could amount to lost time spent at the airport, rather than on your vacation.

Yes, if you are married, or a family, you only hit the button once.

Yeah. Last trip through, they asked Russ to push the button (got green). I didn't realise we'd only need to do it once and pushed it again (got red), but the customs guy let us through without search because Russ got green.

When we got through the door, a woman came running up behind us saying "thank you for saving me from the red light" because since I'd pushed what was meant to be her 'go' she'd then pushed it and got green.

When leaving Mexico, prior to boarding the plane, they also do random bag searches and body searches. I have been selected for this search EVERY time. I don't know how they decide who to search but now I have come to expect it. You get the "pat down", metal scanner, and your carry on bag emptied and searched through.

It has happened leaving Cancun and Cabo - EVERY TIME!!!!

Dawn, Lucinda gets the exact same thing! I tell her that she has that "pat me down, please" look in her eyes!

lol every time we travel I get selected for extra security.. I'm starting to feel like I'm flagged for something.. Tony and I have turned it into a joke but it happens EVERY TIME.. Leaving Jamaica I had to do a full scan they checked my shoes for bomb stuff and completely went through my bags before letting me on the plane.. granted they did this to about 5 people total on the plane, but its every time we travel now..

We are also married however I have not changed my name yet but we are still married and put married on our forms. You could say you just got married and are going on your honeymoon it's not like people change their names the day after they get married. We never had a problem with this before.
