We plan to bring mostly USD and/or pesos for tips, etc, but a credit card for emergencies. What credit cards are accepted in cancun and at TTR? American Express? Visa?
Visa is pretty universal. Either way even if you don't plan on using it make sure you call the number on the back before you go and put in a travel advisory with the dates you'll be in Mexico and that should prevent the card being declined while you are down there from fraud warning.
