The municipality of Benito Juarez is sponsoring a 5K and 10K run, for both sexes and all ages, on Sunday morning. Entry fee is just 37 pesos. You register at the race site, at 6 AM, if you want to participate. The races are to start at 7 AM, leaving from "Circuito Bonampak". ("Just north of the bullring", I was told. Some of you may know exactly what "Circuito Bonampak" refers to, and will tell us, here!) The event has been designated, the Primera Carrera Previa al Maraton Internacional Nocturno 2009 and, if you like running competitively, and not just recreationaly, you can also use this event to help you qualify/tune up for the International, Night Marathon 2009- which last year was run in December, in Cancun. (It will consist of a marathon, a half marathon, and a 5K race.) The competitors are grouped by age and sex, with categories all the way down to 12 year olds, and up to "over 59" age groupings, so this local event, on Sunday, can make a nice outing for the whole family.
Tomorrow AM I'm entering my wife in this event. She thought she would enjoy trying the 5K. Any of you planning to be there, too? I'll be there only as "official event photographer", self-designated- plus act as a second to her. It should be fun!
The race, itself The event was fun, with exactly 180 registered participants. The races got underway at 0730, with all runners starting together. Those who were participating in the 10K event ran two circuits of the 5K route. Bonampak, below the bullring, was closed to traffic and made a nice course for the event. As expected, all age groups joined in, with the youngest allowed just 12 years old (no upper age limit). Awards were given for men, and women's top three finishers, overall; and, for men's and women's top three finishers by age group. Those 60 and over were referred to as the Veteranos, plus! First across the line in the 5K finished in just over 17 minutes; last across in the 10K finished in just over one hour and 15 min! So, everyone who wanted to participate was able to do so, and complete the distances they chose. Benito Juarez Municipality provided security, emergency health services, drinks along the route and at the finish for the runners, and masseuses/trainers for those who needed assistance in the form of massage at the end of the event (a number took advantage of this offering). Sliced oranges were also provided the runners to help them get back up to speed after the event. All in all, it was a well done event, with fun the main objective, although the times were recorded for every runner on the course and the event was billed as a preliminary race to the big Night Marathon 2009, to be run on the 5th of December. There will be another 5 and 10K preliminary run in the month of October- for those who missed this one and think it might be fun to try. To keep you from having to reach for your calculator, 5K is 3.125 miles; 10K is 6.250 miles.
V - Can you keep me posted on the date of the next 5K/10K. It would be great if there was one while my Dad was around at the end of October.
Thanks!!! We aren't there until the 2th. Maybe another time. Running is one of the forms of exercise I would like to get into once I am there. We'll see. My knees are pretty shot from other sports.
Results, etc. Well, my wife ran her first 5K, and really enjoyed it. She set a pace she felt she could maintain for the length of the race, and managed to do it. It was truly a "fun" race, with all ages, shapes and sizes trying their hand at it. The atmosphere was light, and the crowd urged everyone on, the last person to cross the line in the 10K, at just over one hour and 15 minutes, getting the biggest hand of all. When you get here, ToriB, we'll find something you can do, bad knees and all!
So will your wife be running on the new runway at the airport ? Its on 10th October and I have been asked to walk it ( yes thats all I can manage) . I am reluctant but then my neighbour asked me "When was the last time you did something you have never done before? - well I can honestly say I have NEVER ran on an airport runway , so maybe I will give it a go. Your photos have inspired me to get out there and do it. Tracey
V - maybe your wife can give me a swift kick in the butt to get me started. My Dad has tried, but the motivation is quick to dissapear. I wish my rollarblades weren't so heavy to pack. Maybe on a return trip back here I will grab them. I am more of a yoga/pilates fan. But I need more cardio in my life.
5 and 10K Airport, Oct 10 For those curious about what TraceyUK is referring to, there will be a 5 and 10K event run on the new runway at the Cancun airport, to celebrate it's inauguration. The races will be on Oct 10, starting at 7 AM. Early arrival is encouraged. (It appears access to the runway may be restricted to runners only.) For those who wish to register, you can do so, online, at- http://www.emociondeportiva.com/base.asp It also appears you may be able to register in person at the Pro Shop, Sports City; and, at Deportes Marti. It costs 200 pesos to enter. Anyone age 15 and above can compete in the main events; and, there will be special races of lesser distances for younger children down to age six!
