What are your thoughts? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081008/ap_on_re_us/immigration_raid;_ylt=AtX2GBTcMVwuF1Gb.cozf5JvzwcF I am torn on this subject! I think that 300 in one place is certainly a problem, illegal immigration is becoming a problem even here where I live. FAR too many here that speak NO english and even some getting into crime, even murders! I understand they want a better life, and thats the part that tears me apart. Most are just fine and trying to earn a decent dollar, but laws are laws. Seems our government is finally starting to crack down on it..........................
The company that I manage has to follow all employment laws, and I see no reason that others are not held to the same standard. I do not feel the least bit sorry for the employers using illegal workers. They know exactly what the penalty is if they are caught. I emphasize with the displaced workers and their families, however there are legal workers available for many of those jobs. Productivity may decrease and costs may increase, however the employment laws are very clear.
I'm all for LEGAL immigration. Illegal immigration is an insult to those that make every effort to follow US immigration laws properly. I do however, believe there is a case for a guest worker program, but not amnesty for illegals.
These raids have been and will continue to happen every so often mostly to give the appearance that immigration problems are being taken seriously. The truth is that these raids do nothing but create a news story to evoke emotion in people on way or the other. I do not know enough about the economics of the problem to even pretend to have an answer, but I think something, anything needs to be done. Either make it easier for people to come here and work legally or get serious about enforcement.
