Anyone been in the past couple of weeks and either paid the tourist tax online, or when you got there? Some say you don't have to, just don't want to get there and be held up if we do need to pay it
I've seen posts on Facebook of some travelers saying they had to pay it. I think, technically, it's supposed to be paid. However, I've been to Cancun maybe 20 times, including twice this year, and I've never been asked to pay this tax. It might be they ask people at random to pay it. Again, I've never been asked about this so I wouldn't worry about it. If you are asked to pay, then you can take care of it then & there.
Don't worry about it, and definitely don't pay it online in advance. People have asked me but I walk past them the same way as if they are selling fake Cuban cigars. I'm not a tourist anyway, although I do a good impression of one. I have heard that they are going to tighten up on it, but so far haven't heard of any changes.
We just returned Tuesday (Oct 3) and never had anyone ask, or any signs saying it had to be paid. We did get an email from Spirit Airlines with a link to pay the tax but did not do it. Hope this helps.
