We have heard that we should not tip with the USA 2 dollar bills, the locals have a history of difficulty in exchanging them for pesos. It is better to give them 2 one-dollar USA bills. as always jmho
Nope, they definitely prefer Pesos providing the amount is of equivalent value. Pretty sure I never said they prefer Dollars. The problem is, a lot of people from the USA don't know the exchange rate. Many guests think tipping 20 Pesos is the same as tipping 20 USD when it is actually only 1 USD. They think tipping 200 Pesos is like $200 USD, when it's actually $10. Given the choice between 20 Pesos or 20 Dollars, they'll prefer Dollars. Staff will always change Dollars to Pesos every single time, and lose 10-20% in the process. They can't pay their rent, mortgage, car payment or utilities in Dollars. Can't even deposit USD into a bank account here, only exchange and deposit the Pesos. The only thing Dollars are good for in the Cancun economy is nightclub entrance, tours and sometimes grocery shopping.
Wow, good to know. I must have remembered that wrong. Maybe it was the $2 bill thing I was thinking about.
They much prefer US currency. From my experience in Cancun I see people tip 10 peso per drink or $1 as the most common. $1 USD is about 20 pesos. They would prefer Pesos if people tipped the same, but most people tipping in pesos under tip.
Thanks for the correct information. I believe when I asked I was told us money because of as you said most under tip with pasos.
Keep in mind exchanging US dollars for pesos costs the worker a fee at the bank. Bank lineups here go around the block sometimes. Ask them, carry both. Easy peasy. If they live near the hotel zone, chances are its US. If they live further away, probably pesos. For real, it's not rude to ask. We do all the time. Most appreciate the gesture
