Glad to hear you and the rest of the crew are safe. And also good to hear positive reports from the shelter, that sounded like it had the potential to be rough. But the staff is amazing so I’m not surprised it wasn’t bad.

PS: if anyone is ever around this guy ^ make sure you hear him rap an Eminem song, it’s spectacular! Haha.

    Agreed with Steve above.
We've been to Cancun & Cozumel 50+ times over the past 30+ years. Probably half of those times during hurricane season. Normal rain showers on most trips, but never had to evacuate from hurricane. Only once we need to to evac from storm was in Belize, when we had to fly back out 1 day early.

So Steve, can you pls elaborate on how & where do the hundreds of resort guests go during evacuation?
They load u up on buses/vans to go further inland? Where to? overnight in local shelter, school, etc?

This is what impressed me most about reading these posts and news stories. It seems the hotel association and local governments had a plan on how to deal with 32k+ tourists. Having a plan is one thing but being able to implement it can be really hard, especially when it only happens once a decade and many staff have never executed it before. Impressive planning.

I doubt New Orleans, Biloxi, Galveston, South Padre, Destin, and most of the carribean destinations have the same level of planning and resources. The US cities have the resources, but likely no plan.

I'm sure it was also helped by the reduced capacity of the hotels related to Covid, but still moving 32k people with <48 hours notice is a feat.

For the US, the local gubments’ plans are to ask for federal disaster relief funding to bail them out so that the rest of the country can pay for it with federal taxes and they can save their local budgets.
    Sound cynical?
Maybe, but it is typically true.

Thank you Steve! You answered our questions and more, and gave us some ease about this type of situation. From your description, they have a plan, and are able to execute that plan well!

Mainly schools ranging from a few miles inland to 15 miles or so. Our sons' school was used as a shelter, although in this case for guests from other hotels than Temptation. Not that he's actually been to school for 6 months :(

It's really quite an impressive action plan, and went very well.

First the living areas had to be cleaned and Covid sanitized, then bedding, sheets, pillows etc brought in. Usually sunbeds are brought in to use as beds, but this storm developed so quick that they did not have time. For all this they need transport and labor in advance of guests arrival.

Food and water has to be brought in, enough for several days. Of course, hotels can provide that, but at the same time the restaurant staff are still trying to provide a full service at the hotel. So this is over and above what they normally do.

Then guests have to be brought in, again lots of transport required at a time when everyone is asking for transport. Drivers foregoing their own family commitments.

Hotel staff including playmakers actually stay at the shelter to help and also to entertain the guests, again foregoing their own families to do so.

Then when the storm is over everyone needs transport back to the hotel, and they want it now. Everyone is asking for transport at the exact same time.

Drivers and their vehicles have to negotiate downed power lines, roads blocked by trees and floods to provide that service.

Staff have to get to the hotel before guests, to be able to operate the hotel. Everything from clean up, front desk, preparing and serving food, restocking the bar for drinks, management to oversee and coordinate. Again with the severe obstacles as above to negotiate but also including absence of public transport. Their first night open they even had the usual show with performers/dancers etc. Amazing!

Conditions are rough during storms for everyone - locals and tourists alike. You really do have to commend those workers mentioned above.

    Makes me very proud.

Wow! Now that truly is impressive! I hope the guests/tourists changed modes from demanding to helpful.

    Steve, you should be proud!

Curious what damage ended up happening to the resort from the hurricane. Someone posted that pic of damage to the facade up front but did anything happen elsewhere to TTR?

The facade is still not replaced and is being worked on.
Have not noticed any other “real” damage.
Were many many trees down on route from airport though.
So, mostly “superficial” damage and I believe the most important thing is no one died.
    The area was basically spared!
