Dropped back to Cat 3 from 4. Sustained winds of 115mph and gusts up to 145mph. Still no wind or rain here.
Last night the VP of resort operations (or something like that) gave a talk after the nightly show. It was pretty intense and things got serious really fast. He said that if the hurricane kept on track the hotel would be evacuated in buses to a middle school abut 10 miles away. With just water and hopefully some snacks. If you elected not to evacuate you’d be subject to the federalis who would be taking over the hotel zone after evacuations were complete. Craziness. thankfully our trip was already scheduled to end this morning with a 9am departure... we got lucky. As of last night there were no flights out of Cancun from what everyone we talked to said. They were all worried about the situation and having to most likely be out of communication with friends and family during the storm due to power and cell outages. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the hurricanes path, especially the friends and amazing staff we left behind at Temptation. What a crazy, scary situation.
And on that note, if anyone knows Mark and Debbie from Boston it would be much appreciated if you could get us in contact with them. We didn’t get a chance to exchange emails or anything due to the chaos of the final night. Thank you!
Honestly from this description and the news articles I read, it sounds like this was handled well. It sounds like the hotel association had a plan for evacuating ~32,000 tourists from the hotel zone. It also sounds like they had logistics planned out and had enough warning from NOAA about the hurricane path. While a terrifying situation, I am glad to know they had a plan and could implement that plan.
Just saw this look dramatic but not structural. Lets hope this is the worst of it. Saw it posted that they haven been inside yet. Info got sent to me so I dont know where it came from.
All gone now. Wasn’t as bad as feared. Quite a few trees down but very minimal in terms of structural damage. Only a category 2 in the end. Expecting the hotel to reopen later today.
Yes, I agree they definitely seemed organized and calm, although quite serious to get the message across. Glad to hear the early reports of relatively minimal damage.
Well dam.. hope all is well for the resort and staff and guests.. keep the info coming.. were at 2 weeks out now for us..
