    We have now cancelled our trip. March 19-31. Being in the Fire Department in B.C. all personnel have been told to cancel all trips outside of Canada and that includes going to the States. We were suppose to leave in 5 days. So sad.
    We will re-book!

    Work finally out of the way, now that all the local courthouses ahve cancelled all their non-emergency cases, I was able to actually sit down and do a deep dive on this thing.

    I agree witht he above post. Simply said.

    A couple things were really interesting in the reading, which I began on Wikipedia (not that they're really reliable, but they do send one off in the right direction way more often than they don't), spent a bit of time at CDC and WHO, and some old-timey research papers on the old bat-infecting coronavirus strains and so forth.

    The first thing that jumped out at me was... remember back in 2003, that big "outbreak" that never really ended up happening? Same sort of virus, slightly different strain. In 2013 the so-called SARS epidemic? By the way, SARS (acronym S.A.R.S.) stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome... which I though was redundant, since medically severe & acute can be synonyms, except for an anal (and not in the fun way) minority, which stands for the premise that severe = really bad and acute = really fast. To me, either severe or acute (read, really bad or really fast) both suck, so there you go. My point being, this is a bug the world has been seeing in one form or another for a long, long time.

    Not to minimize death... but here goes anyway. It appears that 80% of the victims are over age 60, and the large majority of those already had a serious health condition (cardiovascular disease, pulmonary/breathing diseases, diabetes, immunosupression, etc). In other words (mean phrase coming...) these are the weak of the herd. This is rough, but real world, happens every day, kind of thing.

    I went to my doc for my annual in Feb., and I asked him about the COVID-19 illness caused by the corona virus and he looked at me for a second then said, "Did you know that about 35,000 people died of the flu last year?"

    I said, "Nope, I didn't know that. Is that a lot?"

    He replied, "Well, there's this scar about this virus going around, and so far, I think the total count is around 4,000 dead worldwide. So, you tell me. Diabetes is way worse, by comparison, at least right now."

    So, who knows? Wasn't the flu (influenza) bback in the middle ages called the White Plague? I can't remember high school biology that clearly, too many party nights at Bash, I think I killed that set of brain cells.

    To me... and this is just me... it seems the planet is over-reacting. Put cautions in place, yes. Educate about how to not spread communicable diseases? Sure, we've been doing that for years (and everyone seems to ignore the instructions). Quarantine people who are actively infected, showing symptoms and gernally, obviously contagious? Absolutely, on a voluntary, and maybe sometimes imposed) basis, like "Bob, get the hell out of here, you'll get everyone sick. Go home and take the week off. Use up that sick time. That's what it's for."

    Drink lots of water, eat healthily, get goo drest, supplement your itamins (the immune system uses up LOTS of trace elements, so make sure to "put them back.") and the vast majority of people will do fine.

    The symptom list for this SARS should be helpful, as it looks familiar:

    1. Low to moderate Fever; (~85%, I'm trying to remember an average of the numbers I read today, I'm probably off a couple-few points)
    2. Dry cough (30-35%)
    3. Sneezing (15%);
    3. Runny nose (25%);
    5. Fatigue (8%).

    In rare cases (less than 5%) a sore throat.

    Sounds like the NyQuil ad, doesn't it.

    Thanks for your thoughtful and detailed post.

    2264 people died from Ebola, worldwide last year. If I had Ebola in my city like Covid19 I wouldn’t be comparing it to the flu lol.

    A lot of really smart people have done a lot of good work to keep it that way. The same people managing covid19.

    Hopefully we win and we can say the same about the other outbreaks. I think that we can say it was never as big of a deal is because of their work.

    If you really believe that, buy Put calls on the VIC ;)

    Hey there. We're scheduled to depart from Winnipeg on the 21st. Wife has total panic on being stuck in Mexico if they stop flying back. Is this a valid concern?

    Canadian govt has issued an advisory that Canadians abroad should hop on planes as soon as possible before commercial planes are no longer flying. I trust you aware of the 14-day self-quarantine that will be required when you get back to Canada?

    Sorry I mean VIX. Was a typo

    The VIX is a volatility index, otherwise known as the fear indicator. Because of the virus situation ,it has caused the index to soar.

    A put is a contract that allows you to buy the VIX once the prices goes down to a predetermined point. The value of the contract goes up while the VIX goes down and you just resell the contract or close the position

    We are flying from the UK to mexico via the US. So as of right now it’s looking unlikely. We leave in 47 days so let’s see what happens in the coming days/weeks.
    Fingers crossed we can get there though
