    There was a thread about CC deposits last year where a few people having to argue with the resort to get their deposit back. This has never happened to me, but some caution is warranted, given the random stories of difficulties.

    To protect ourselves, when we checked out last July, I demanded a printout of our room charges (which were zero). They don't generate one if you didn't incur any charges to the room, so you have to push to get them to do it. I wanted to have written proof of our hotel account in case there was any issue about our deposit subsequently not being released. Then I would have something to show my CC company if there is a dispute.

    Newbies should not read this and be alarmed...the resort does not have a practice of trying to steal your deposit, but this IS Mexico, so you should be careful about everything you do with your credit card. Ideally, you should be giving the resort a very low-limit credit card, not your platinum Amex. I would not pay the deposit in cash, myself. Take your city-savvy with you when you vacation.

    I had read that thread so I checked with them directly and that was the response I received. We weren’t really worried about it, just wanted to clarify it. The only problem we have is that we’re 72 days away!

    Almost every hotel does it, just had it done in Punta Can. They have to charge something to make sure its valid. From their prospective hotels have to protect themselves. Imagine someone putting a bogus card on file running up the room bill them leaving without checking out.
    One thing to know, on our last trip a young couple found out the hold on some card doesn't clear for days. They were raising hell at the desk because apparently it maxed their card. I (well everyone) heard them saying they were counting charging some portion of their trip home. That they didnt have enouph money to get home from the airport. They wanted the hotel to release the money or pay them. They were told the problem was with the cc company and not the hotel. Personally i wouldn't go to a third world country without some reserve and everything covered but it was good fyi

    We've been several times and we have never even been asked for a credit card at the front desk.

    Wondering if it has to do with booking through the hotel or 3rd party?

    We have always booked 3rd party. This is my first time booking through the resort. I guess I'll see when we check in if they ask for deposit.

    I didn’t saw January go at all. If February and March can go as fast as this. I’ll be in heaven.

    I'm with you, Jess! January was a fast month. I was thinking just yesterday that I need to get more serious about my diet, as I have not lost much of my Xmas weight, and it's already the end of January. I DID boost the number of workouts I'm doing, but I've lacked serious commitment to the rabbit-food diet. Lettuce = yuck. Sourdough bread = YUMMMMM! Need to change this mentality ;)
