Has anyone gone on any guided tours to the Mayan ruins? Are they worth it as a brief break from the fun, or is better to just stay at the resort? ~ Mrs. SBC
It is not a brief break. It is a long ride down to Tulum. It will take most of a day. Lots of walking and HOT. A better break would be to ride the ferry, short walk from TTR, over to Isles Majeris. (Spelling). Rent a golf cart and explore the island. Great beach and shopping.
Depends on you/ how long you are staying/etc. we’ve done the Tulum/snorkel trip. But that was when we stayed at Maroma. It is a full day. Get up early, etc, and back at resort at 5 pm. You could arrange a private car and make it quicker. I would think it’s probably a 1.5 hr drive from TTR each way.
First of all, it is scorching hot at the MR! Secondly it’s a pretty awesome place to visit. Thirdly you can catch the collectivo (bus) for a couple of bucks and, do what you want when you get there, instead of following the crowd. There is a beach at the sight, so bring your suits and cool off in the ocean. When we went we was staying in playa del Carmen, so the bus ride wasn’t that long. From Cancun it would be a pretty long trip.
Like the others said, it’s extremely hot and It will take up most of your day. It was ok but I wouldn’t do it again. I definitely wouldn’t leave Temptation for that.
Thank you for your responses, everyone! Since April 2020 will be our first visit, I think we'll be better off staying and playing at the resort. Planning a daytrip to the ruins might be something we do before or after a future visit as it sounds everyone has a great time at TTR and becomes a repeat visitor! ~ Mr. & Mrs. SBC
April is hot. Like it was said, depends on how many days you plan on staying. If you're there long enough and plan on bargaining against a sales pitch, get a tour out of it for free. We've done Chichen Itza and cenotes...LONG day but for us, visiting locals and learning habits and customs is something we enjoy and want. You leave very early but sleep on the bus on the way there and back (2hrs each way by bus), and get back late, like 6 pm. If your there long enough, we found it was well worth the trip. We went with Amigo tours, and the guide was Marco. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge. Just excellent. And if you want some souvenirs, that is THE place to shop cause they sell homemade stuff for pennies compared to what they do in town. Pays for itself. Great lunch too at a Mayan villa. It all depends how much you want to visit or how much you want to party and how much you need a break! So the longer you stay...like more than 10 days...you'll prolly need a break! Isla is also a very nice day and a lot shorter ride.
I went to Tulum while on a cruise once. It was a family trip and I had no choice but to go. It was the most miserable day of vacation I’ve ever experienced. You couldn’t pay me enough money to do that trip again.
The Mayan ruins are way awesome to explore... and the trip to and through them is way exhausting. For our vacation money, and this is Just Us, National Geographic has already done it a couple of times and they take better pictures than we can.
Hey you seen one set if ruins or pyramids you’ve seen them all. Just sayain’. Agree with John most whole heartedly!
