Hi All We've just been given some information about a new Environmental Tax in the Benito Juarez parish of Mexico which includes hotels located in Cancun, Playa Mujeres & Puerto Morelos area and the hotel where you are due to stay. This tax is payable locally during check in at the hotel and is approximately 24 Mexican Pesos or 1.2 USD per room per night. Has anybody else heard of this?
Just found this about it NEW GOVERNMENT ENVIRONMENTAL FEES FOR ALL HOTEL GUESTS IN PUERTO MORELOS AND CANCUN Are you staying at Grand Residences in Puerto Morelos or will you be traveling to Cancun this year? If so, we would like to share information about two new municipal taxes that will affect you. As part of their work to protect the environment, the Benito Juarez (Cancun) and Puerto Morelos Municipal Governments will begin charging an Environmental Sanitation Fee to all hotel and resort guests in their districts. In Puerto Morelos, the new environmental tax came into effect on January 1, 2019 and applies to owners and guests staying at Grand Residences by Royal Resorts. The Benito Juarez municipal authorities will begin charging the new tax on March 1 and it will apply to members and guests staying at the Royal Resorts in Cancun. In accordance with Municipal Finance Laws in Puerto Morelos, and to be implemented in Benito Juarez (Cancun) on March 1, the Environmental Sanitation Fee that will be charged to your account at check out is as follows: Room: $24.18 pesos per night Suite: $24.18 pesos per night Villa (2 or 3-bedroom): $48.36 pesos per night
So for a 7 night vacation make sure to have an extra 338.52mxn ($17.54.usd) for checkout. If this is now that case, I am sure we will start hearing reports of it very soon.
@Steve just posted on facebook that he believes this isn't true and it's another case of Robert Cook ripping people off again. Other people are stating they have just checked out and have not been asked to pay anything.
Steve - I think you doubled the tax - my reading is that the tax is per room, not per person. (Posted before I saw the rest of the thread about this not being accurate in the first place).
