we always get pesos from our bank before we go … we usually get a few hundred converted that way when we tip they don't have to convert it and pay a fee and trust me if you tip right you will be remembered lol even if its in normal everyday money after about our 2nd night we don't have to ask for dinks when we go to the bar the guys know what we want and generally we don't have a wait our big tips always go
I have heard things like that in the past also. Always from somebody making an excuse for being a cheap tipper.
We have done both USD and Pesos on different trips. I really wanted to know what the staff preferred so on this last trip (we were there in mid July) I asked a few different staff what they prefer (before they knew what I had) and they all said USD. That was only a few staff so it is very possible they were the minority and most prefer Pesos. But just FYI. We are going back in October and I am going to ask more staff next time. For me it doesn’t matter - I want to do whatever they prefer.
That does seem strange, I can't for the life of me understand why they would say they appreciate Dollars over Pesos. They'll lose 15-20% when exchanging to a currency they can actually spend. I wonder if they say they prefer whatever they think is in your pocket I did hear once that some of the staff try to live off their salary and use tips for savings, possibly that might be it. Although base salaries are so low I'm sure it wouldn't be easy.
So I guess it would be abnormal then for someone who was in the service industry for 10 years and who isnt a cheap tipper to post a sincere question on this forum regarding tipping?
Sorry I didn't mean to offend. My comment was about resort staff making almost as much as doctors. Not if it is good to convert to pesos. Having worked 10 years in the service industry I am sure you already knew that bartenders and waiters don't make almost as much as doctors.
I'm sure all the staff and even Playmakers accept any kind of tip whether it's pesos or dollars they are so appreciative and happy to receive and with their excellent service we are glad to tip and the better the job the bigger the tip going there so many times I've never seen so many people so grateful and thankful for anything they get
The only thing that I can say to this is that I think people get confused when they are tipping the converted money (I know I have after a late night or long day). I have seen people leave 20 pesos as a breakfast or lunch time tip after a long meal. Now I don't know if they are just low tippers, or they are confused and don't realize they left essentially a dollar. Or leaving a 50, which is less then 3 bucks. It's often a misconception that removing the zero, isn't what you are leaving in USD. 50 pesos isn't $5(usd). So maybe the staff says they prefer the pesos, because people tip heavier. (Just a theory)
sometimes for breakfast we don't tip to much ..maybe 2 20's or a 50 but we do breakfast ourselves usually the only thing the waitperson does is clean the table dinner and the bar is where most of our money goes Hubs usually divides the money into so much per day .. and makes little stacks I know last time we had a few early nights so we had a bunch left over the last day .. so I had a huge stack ..gave a big bunch of it to the bash bar guys letting them know we were leaving in the morning but they did a heck of a job ..we went to the pool bar on our way out and found the guys that worked hard for us and gave them a big bunch to .. that was after leaving some for the maid and our butler dude .. we didn't want to take it home we are on vacation everything is paid for ..so for us tipping a lot makes up for what we don't pay for drinks lol
