Yep, whatever each individual feels comfortable in, rock that shit. Guy or gal. Me personally, it's not my preference and I would feel goofy in them so it's completely about want I feel comfortable in. I'd go nude in a heartbeat but I'm picky on my outfits, strange I know. Lol.
Christy has been riding me to wear some of these this upcoming trip. Just have to see how comfortable I am in them.
Love my square cuts. Have a variety of cuts and they are definitely more comfortable than my board shorts I wear at home.

Rich wears a size medium normally, and we order XL in his square cut trunks from China. I had to order twice and toss the first set of super tiny child shorts. At the same time even after the reoder I think I paid $50 for 10 shorts so well worth it. He wears them all the time and they where shockingly good quality
I ordered some off of some of the links in this string (that seems to keep going...) and tried them on. All fit comfortably (very comfortably) but are "interestingly" revealing depending on the material and cut! I never liked all that material hanging down my legs (especially in sand).
