Has anyone else heard about the latest shootings on the beaches?

I would not worry about shooting in Cancun. 99% of violence that involves tourists, involves drugs. Tourists buying drugs, etc. Stay away from that type of stuff and you'll be fine. Not to mention, you don't need to leave the resort, and security is excellent

When the state department put out the travel advisory for the Cancun area earlier this year, it listed all of the violence as drug related as the reason. So as tflexxin said, as long as you’re not involved in any of the drug selling/buying/trafficking you should be fine.

We have been to both Cancun and Playa many times but friends just returned from the Mayan and there were three shootings and one was in broad daylight. You are correct probably drug related but just the same it was close enough for the people at the resort to see.we have no issues returning to Temptation but hopefully they keep security up as its always to tahe an afternoon stroll on the beautiful beach.

Yeah I mean we have been to Mexico 4 times this year. Including once renting a house w the entire family. It is generally very safe. You are perfectly safe at TTR and the beach. Yes there is a chance, although very very extremely small, you will see drug violence in the hotel zone, when years ago this was almost impossible. That imposes some level of risk if you go out to the clubs, still small, that you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like any city. On our trips this year as a result we didn’t visit the clubs in the hotel zone. The scariest thing is when the papers reported the violence in the hotel zone in June, July, August (not against tourists but in sight of tourists) the writers got death threats. So I looked everywhere for the stories about additional shootings in the zone in November and it is only people posting on forums like this. Nothing online (I can find in those local papers / online sites). Sucks that they shut up the news w threats.

The press doesn't cover it up, you're just not seeing the right news sources or maybe not searching in Spanish . In fact incidents are covered in minute gory detail, often too much detail.

There are also a few guys on motorbikes with Police scanners who race to the scene each time something happens and live stream on facebook. Look up Inspector Nocturno on FB.

Here's a couple of local news sources:
Novedades Quintana Roo, las noticias de hoy en el estado
    Cancún – DePeso

I get a daily classified drug violence in Mexico reports for my work and I still go to cancun. I cannot get into specific details but would never go to Veracruz for sure and prob not Baja/Cabo. I still feel comfortable on cancun but not like 4 to 5 years ago

There has been increased violence in Quintana roo and it will prob rise more until the cartels sort the area out cause the cartel boss in cancun is in jail.

with that said...I would prob not invest in a long term vacation package with a resort in Mexico. You never know what the future holds.

There is violence in the US for sure...look at Vegas.
