My wife has snorkeling and scuba diving on the list of things to do off-resort while we’re there. Has anyone done the beginner scuba trips and was the actual hour or so of diving worth the 1.5 hours of “class” and swimming pool lessons? And has anyone seen anyone snorkeling during the swim time on the Boobs Cruise? If so, that would kill 2 birds with one stone lol.
Maybe it was my alcohol induced memory but I personally dont remember any snorkeling going on with our Boobs Cruise. Of course me personally, searching for lil Nemo and friends underwater wouldnt have been as exciting as what was going on with the cruise. Possibly it happend but i was too distracted to notice or care lol
We did the pool "class" and dive. Honestly, there's just not that much to see in Cancun for scuba diving. Lots of sand, few fish, not much coral or anything. There's much better diving in Cozumel.
There is a dive sight where they have made concrete statues while not a lot of diverse sea life it is a very interesting dive site the company we used is https://aquaworld.com.mx the better sea life is diving in Cozumel. There are many dive shops in the area you could do a vacation just on diving but like I have said to others stay at TTR and then book a non all inclusive in some place like Tulum and see what else MX has to offer.
Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like she’ll figure out if she likes SCUBA diving or not, but it won’t be so exciting that she’ll want to spend another day later in the week doing it again. Sounds like a win to me lol. I really wouldn’t want to snorkel on the BC, but I’d rather sacrifice an hour during that, than spend half a day off resort for a snorkeling trip.
I can't see if the resort has an on site dive operation anymore. they used to and generally you could take a boat right from the resort. A resort course certification is good for up to 30 ft which is about what the dives towards Isla Mujeras is. The museum is pretty interesting and a nice calm (not generally any surge or drift) dive. Excellent for a new diver to get a taste. There are some better, deeper dives (wreck and drift) dives outside the breakwater off the point. But generally you have to be certified for those. I agree, Cozumel is much better for sea life but you generally are gone a long day for those. I believe 3 or 4 of us will be doing a dive sometime around the 28/29th but not sure where yet. We are all certified and open to others joining us!
One of the problem with a resort dive if I am not mistaken it expires after your trip is over it something to check on. You may want to do a full class before getting to MX.
We looked into that, but up here, it’s about $1,000 for both of us to get PADI certified. So a few hundred bucks for a resort dive is pretty cheap to figure out if we even enjoy it or not.
There's no PADI ceritifcation when you do a resort a "class". They basically just put you in a pool and get you used to the equipment for an hour. Then you go out on a guided dive (follow the leader). One thing, there is fire coral, so don't just go in shorts like i did! That stuff burns like crazy. Wear a wet suit if possible...or at least avoid the fire coral.
