I've gone out of my way to bring a few hundred each of $1 and $5 bills, among my other cash. But, I can see the point in tipping in pesos so they don't need to convert. But be sure to do the conversion before you tip (don't tip $1 or $2 pesos, which convert to about 10 or 20 cents in US currency roughly). I'm sure since they advertise your cost includes all taxes, tips, etc hurts their tips. I know you can convert dollars to pesos at the airport, hotel or across the street. Any tips (no pun intended) on where to get the best conversion?
Agree that if you cant do a mental conversion then just tip USD(if your american) we normally get pesos just so it is easy for them and we treat 20 pesos as $1 us so they actually make out a little better. I think the conversion rate is around 17-18 over the last couple years.
I feel like those currency conversion places are a rip-off. That's why I asked (in another thread) if there was an ATM at Temptations that disperses US and Pesos. The better ATMs do both, and you don't have to worry about the conversion rate since it goes by the daily rate. You can always order foreign currency from your bank before your trip, but that takes time. Ain't nobody got time for that.
The best place to change over is right in the airport. The hotel will also do exchanges and they charge a very little fee, it isn't much different than the airport. The places were you can get ripped of are when you are further out, or on Isla, where your options are much more limited.
It's pretty simple, today's rate is 17.8678 Peso to 1 USD, they are maybe getting it for 1 peso below that and they will probably give you around 15 Peso to 1 USD. T
Yes, today with it being 17.8 to 1usd you would get about 15-15.5. This is why we order 300 usd worth of pesos from the bank before leaving mixed notes. I wont exchange for a lower rate or aka pay for them to exchange my money. Of course that's how they make their money and I don't fault them for it I just wont use the service.
