    Lol, it's available directly across the street from the resort...pretty sure the bartenders don't need to spike drinks with Viagra :)

    There is a good thread about this issue in the Desire forums. These were reported by actual guests (including me)

    I don't know how to link the thread here, but if you go to the forum and search for its title "Mysterious Issues" - it'll come up

    I was wondering how long it would take for this to be posted.
    Yes it can happen anywhere, More likely to have a watered down drink at a resort then fake drinks, IMO.
    I have been drugged in at a restaurant we used to go to weekly by a bartender. As soon as I told him the next week what had happened he was Furious with me and threatened to kick us out. At that point I knew it was him where before that I thought it was a customer at the bar.

    There is a reason why I use a Bubba or similar cup with lid at the pool. Minimize the risk and make sure you pay attention to your surroundings.

    While I agree that things like this happen and that normal precautions should be taken (unattended drinks or drinks offered by strangers etc) I think it is a bit much that a large resort or chain would be complicit in using tainted alcohol. It would affect their bottom line if caught not to mention the legal ramifications...Mexico is not a third world country without laws and when it comes to tourism (a major source of income) I'd hazard a bet they are some pretty strict regulations. Actions of individuals, staff or otherwise, is harder to control but I do think a major resort would be held accountable in the end.

    And I firmly believe the incidents in the article would actually be less than what happens in bars and clubs back home. Not saying it doesn't happen as
    as I'm sure it does but the article seems rather sensationalistic and rather "FOX" newsish. Almost akin to "vacation in Mexico and you will shot in the drug wars" that are happening on every street corner of every city and town. I truly feel for anyone who has experienced this and am not trying to belittle what is a horrible experience to those who have endured it. You could almost write the same article for any major city in the world less the hospital part. That I am more worried about if I were to be injured while vacationing. Always know where to go before hand if you are ever injured while vacationing...lot to be said for planning and preparation just in case, and normal precautions.

    IMHO

    Edit: Also remember that your travel medical insurance will not pay if you have illegal drugs in your system or are impaired. Most plans mention quite specifically alcohol consumption or alcohol related... take that to mean you that if have alcohol in your system expect them to not want to pay.

    This happened quite a few weeks ago, and was subject to local discussion at the time. Seems to have just surfaced in the US.

    I do think drink tampering exists in Cancun, like it does anywhere. But there isn't any evidence of it in this sad case. Toxicology reports revealed nothing other than alcohol (0.25) which is pretty high and especially for a girl of that age. It was their first day, they'd been traveling for hours, arrived to 100 degrees with the euphoria of sunshine, vacation, pool, party and alcohol in Mexican measures, probably not eaten much, egged on to have another shot. Inexperienced young drinkers. Can't see it being anything but a tragic accident, I'd put it down to First Day Syndrome that many of us have experienced.

    I also saw a comment I have no reason to disbelieve from a guy in a local area Facebook group whose girlfriend is a nurse and attended the two kids at the hospital they were taken to. Apparently, the brother was very aggressive kicking and punching the medical staff and that took much needed attention away from his sister who was in a more serious condition and subsequently died.

    In 2016, 14.5 Million International travelers passed through Cancun airport. That's like 40,000 per day. It would be unusual if something like this never happened to anyone. The news article posted above went back to 2011 to gather it's collection of 4 or 5 anecdotes of similar problems in Mexico. That must be like 80 Million International visitors to the region over that time.

    Some US news outlets have an anti Mexico agenda, and this was a good opportunity to push that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I had been drinking daily on my 2 trips to TTR. While there are different variables to consider; i.e.: drink & food intake, sun, time, weight, etc. , I was hanging out 1 day with a premier family and after having a drink or two at the premier bar I felt a lot more drunk than any other day there.
    I definitely believe the drinks are watered down, now not so for premier members, I don't think I was drugged.
    And with TTR (repeat clientele), I think the issue of being drugged would be a lot lower than at other resorts.
    American tourists say they were served bootleg alcohol | Daily Mail Online
    I see NO evidence that anyone was drugged but that their alcohol levels were extremely high. The toxicology reports confirm no opiates, benzos, amphetamines or other drugs in the system when she died. Alcohol levels were >.24 for both of these kids.
    Then again, the female weighed about 130lbs and had 7 shots of alcohol while the guy was 150lbs with about 7 shots as well in two hours.
    Is BootLeg alcohol that dangerous?
    I suspect if you have one drink at a time and then WAIT for a 10 mins to see the effects, you can gauge your situation pretty well.
    I have been at TTR on 4 different visits now and have NOT had any experience where I felt drugged nor anyone with me. I have NEVER seen anyone drugged from the DRINKS themselves except for people who PURPOSELY took drugs on their own volition.
    Does TTR use bootleg liquor?
    I didn't post this to insinuate that any of this activity occurs at TTR. I have no idea. September will be my first trip there. I just saw this article the other day posted by a local CBS affiliate and thought that it was apropos to the many discussions, particularly alcohol-related ones, brought up on this forum. Just play it safe and don't be naive.
    Yeah I just linked a bunch of articles that I just saw myself in multiple media sources with a simple google search and while reading the dailymail.
    It seems like there are a slew of articles that are claiming tainted drinks, bootleg drinks, drugged drinks, sexual assaults, etc. at the resorts in Mexico.
    The problem is that all of these articles never seem to have concrete evidence or make that much sense logically.
    Why would Iberostar randomly drug the drinks of these two tourists so they could die in the pool? Also, if they took shots of tequila with other random strangers, how would they know the drinks would go to this brother/sister team?
    It seems to be more logical that they got blackout drunk in the afternoon and she drowned where there weren't that many people around.
    People go to Cancun to get DRUNK beyond belief in a fashion that has been banned in many American resorts these days. This is part of the appeal of Cancun. Its ALL INCLUSIVE where you can drink as much as you want.
    However, people seem to want to blame others for their own bad behavior these days. Instead of admitting you drank way too much causing a problem, you want to blame some nefarious drugging that really can't be proven.
    I read the article posted yesterday and then a few of my friends posted it to my Facebook page because we go to Cancun at least twice a year. Not once have I or my wife felt unsafe with drinks made at TTR or Desire for that matter. One of the things I have noticed is when a "story" comes out such as this, mass hysteria runs rampant with said story. As Steve has said in his response, 14.5 million people travelers going thru Cancun, you are bound to have a few bad eggs in the mix. With that said, be cautious and try to keep your wits on point. There has been two occasions when I was laid up in my room because of not feeling well. I can tell you it was self induced with too many SOL Beers on the yacht, add the sun and the rocking, mixture for a not so pleasant experience. Oh, and there was that one time when I cut out beer all together so I was drinking Scotch at the pool all day. Again adding sun and drink after drink, then comes the OUCH....
    Cancun is our place to party, and it will continue to be as long as we can afford it or if there comes a travel ban. Either way, Cancun is for us! Enjoy it!
