Another "it will never open on time" thread today on Facebook.

This was my reply. I might not know much about construction techniques, but I can understand simple economics and scale.

" I think we can all agree that the superstructure is pretty much done, no more large amounts of load bearing concrete to have to cure before the next level can be started. So everything that is left is dependent only on sufficient materials and labour being available, permits being in order, subject to any time lost due to extreme weather (unlikely).

If one guy can paint two rooms a day, how long will it take him to paint 400 rooms? 200 days. If 100 guys are painting how long will it take them? 2 days. The speed to finish the job is directly proportional to the number of people doing it (presuming enough tins of paint and brushes are available).

A painter for a day in Mexico costs $20 per day. A painter for a day in the US costs $20 per hour. You can hire 8 Mexican painters for the price of one in the US. An open hotel room that costs $300 may generate $150 revenue per night per room, probably more. So, they are not going to leave pre-booked rooms closed due to lack of labour, and there really is not much else that could cause a delay. They could easily have 1,000 guys working on the site if needed. Whereas in the US for a similar hotel that is unlikely to be the case due to cost and/or lack of guys available.

'Painters' are obviously just an example and can apply to electricians, plumbers, plasterers, labourers, whatever they need. Cancun has tens of thousands of such workers who flock here from all over Mexico because of the amount of construction that is always going on. They can be hired (and fired) at very short notice, unlike many of our own home countries, so amount of labour is very flexible and can be increased or reduced very quickly as demand requires.

It has always been said by the hotel that the first few months are soft opening, which means all facilities might not be available to start. They have never said they will be done (finished) by August 15, they said they will be open. And open, I am sure they will be."
