We have been to the markets up and down the hotel zone and to Walmart, took a few bus rides to do this and that was enough of a adventure in it's self. We also did several of the Boobs Cruises to Isla Mujeres, we are not really into the touristy historical stuff.

We love to take the bus (the fare is only $1 per person) and head to La Isla shopping plaza. It's a lovely outdoor mall with lots of places to shop and dine. It's near the water so you can take in a great view while you're there. I believe the Starbucks there offers free wifi (with a purchase)

There are also many clean restrooms.

My favorite part of La Isla is "Plaza La Fiesta" which is a great place to get souvenirs. I try to go there each time and they always have great gifts. I like to buy small $1 gifts for coworkers and this place never disappoints. Last time I also got a strip of like 20 lollipops for $1. They are individually wrapped so you can detach each and give as a souvenir as well. (I have like 30 coworkers and I had to be budget-conscious) They sell tequila (sometimes have samples on display) and jewelry and gift items big and small. Many items are reduced in price if you buy more (e.g. buy 3 get 1 free) Prices are posted in US dollars and Mexican Pesos. They accept credit cards.

As Cheers2us said, we have also taken the bus to La Isla Shopping Plaza. it is actually very nice.
We have gone to Market 28 as well.. and most likely would never go back there, just tons of high pressure salesman. We prefer the little outdoor place about a block West of Hooters in the middle of the hotel zone.. much smaller but no high pressure tactics.
A day trip (ferry ride and $40 golf cart rental) to Isla Mujeres is a must do if you have never been before.
Our last trip included a two hour evening trip to Senor Frogs for dinner and actually liked the food and entertainment there. (got a kick out of the vanillas thinking it was the wildest place ever)
Other than that, we do not leave the resort a bunch as why leave the fun !!!!
