Just got back to uk from cancun this morning... we only went out to coco bongo's and surrounding clubs one night, walked about them places other nights, Found no problem at all everyone friendly... the pub crawl was cancelled as precaution this Tuesday for obvious reasons other than that we found HZ a true leisure pleasure and 1mil% be going back... as any trip any country just be vigilant at all times...
Thanks for the updates Steve I honestly have never been concerned with safety on any of our trips to Mexico (13+), but.. I am a tiny bit for this one coming up. But... I think we will just stay at the resort although I was hoping to go to Cozumel this trip just for an adventure. If you could please limit the news on CNN and NBC so Rick's brainwashed mom doesn't have a heart attack over these "few" events and ride our assess for "making bad decisions" blah blah "you have kids to think about"... blah blah.. You know... LOL I'd surely buy you a HUGE bucket of shots and beers!!! Rick & Kelly
My brother and I are going down to PDC Feb 9th thru the 15th. The recent shootings will have our awareness on full alert but its not going to stop us from having fun, exploring and partying. Downtown Minneapolis seems to have a shooting every other weekend. Doesnt stop us from going we just watch our surroundings better and stay away from troubled areas. If you are going to be down there during my dates PM me
I totally hear you on that one. If I've heard that once from the MIL I've heard it a thousand times and I know usually that's an exaggeration but not in this case it's more literal. I agree with everyone else go with a eyes wide open approach and a little more cautiousness and you should be fine. Hopefully things settle down soon and we can put a plan together for a trip down later on this year. And when I say settle down I'm not talking about the things down there I'm talking about things here.
We have kids to think about too (6 and 12) and have lived in downtown safely full time for 13 years with next to no incident, have never even heard a gunshot. Bringing kids up here was one of the better decisions we have made, no regrets whatsoever. I'm sure a week or two a year in an all inclusive hotel you rarely leave will pass without incident. I agree though, not always easy to explain to those who don't understand.
Hi Steve, We will be staying in PDC in 2 weeks. We are in our upper 50's, won't be seeking drugs or running with a wild crowd, but are interested in doing some dancing while there. Our nights will also likely end by 12:30. Prior to the shooting incident we were planning on spending 1 or more nights at La Vaquita, Mandala, or Palazzo. We respect your opinion and are curious what your thoughts are on this topic? Has Omar returned to the clubs since the shootings? Thanks for your input. Joe and Lucinda
All of those places are known for drug selling, as is any nightclub in the area. That means that cartels already have an interest there, it follows that there is always the potential for trouble from rival cartels. A couple of waiters were shot dead at the Mandala club in Cancun (not PDC) a month or two ago, but no tourists were hurt. Tourists aren't targets (they are the cartels income, they need tourists) but there always is and always has been a tiny risk of getting caught up if anything were to happen. You'd have to be extremely unlucky though, probably more chance of being struck by lightning. I haven't spoke to Omar in the last week, so not sure if he has returned to the clubs. I'd expect he wont stay away for long.
Just to put it in the proper perspective...Shootings -- Crime in Chicagoland -- chicagotribune.com We go to Chicago to visit often without a thought, yet we hear about this in Cancun and want to cancel plans. It's not fair to the good people who work in hospitality in Cancun!
Ok, I'm bored, so Ive been looking at statistics. Most all of us who live in the east have vacationed at Myrtle Beach, SC at some time. I mean really, if you want to go to a fun family oriented coastal town, where could be safer than Myrtle Beach! Right? Quintana Roo homicide rate: 7/ 100,000 Myrtle Beach homicide rate: 26/ 100,000 Your odds of being offed in Myrtle Beach are roughly 4 times greater than in Cancun. Maybe the statistic that we are most afraid of is the odds of being offed while doing something really kinky!!! ;-)
